CUBISM LEAVES

Cubism Leaves

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original cubism leaves using drawing techniques learned in class 
  • Use monochromatic colors (tints, hues, shades), line types (wavy, curly, zig zag), and shape variation (geometric, organic, free form) inspired by Spanish Painter (1881-1973) Pablo Picasso and French Painter (1882-1963) Georges Braque
  • Use introduction drawing (perspective, observational, contour) and design principles (balance, composition, repetition) relating to 20th Century Art Movements
  • Define Cubism (combining all different views of an object or person into a single drawn plane)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Three Musicians (1921) Pablo Picasso
2. Read Autumn Leaves by Ken Robbins
3. Discussion Questions "Do we come up with completely new and original things? Have you drawn something never seen before? Do you have a new perspective after looking at this artwork? What is a different way of seeing this same art work? What differences do you notice between the Spanish and French compared to Russian Cubists? What choices would you have make if you were Picasso? How can you distinguish the parts of Three Musicians? How would you use warm and cool colors?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use Leaf Templates to trace free form/organic leaves
2. Use a straight edge or ruler to add five lines (horizontal, diagonal, vertical) to leaf drawings
3. Use Metallic Colored Sharpies (copper, silver, gold) to outline free form/organic leaves

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Cubism Leaves for Assigned Table
2. Candlestick and Playing Cards on a Table (1910) George Braque
3. Discussion Questions " Cubism- combining all different views of an object or person into a single drawn plane. When was the Cubism Movement? What are the characteristics of Cubism? How did Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque develop this new art form? What is the difference between Analytical Cubism and Synthetic Cubism?"

Lesson Activities 

1. Use warm colors (red orange yellow) to fill in the positive space (leaves) 
2. Use cool colors (blue green purple) to fill in the negative space (background) 
3. Fill in white space of free form/organic leaves within the leaf drawings

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Cubism Leaves for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (metallic sharpies, washable markers, pencils)

Lesson Activities

1. Use line types (wavy, curly, swirls) to add patterns to free form/organic leaves
2. Use Metallic Colored Sharpies (copper, silver, gold) to outline line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) of leaf drawings
3. Use color mixing techniques (blending, overlapping, contrasting) to finish Cubism Leaves
