PAKISTANI TRUCK ART

Pakistani Truck Art

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create original Pakistani Truck Art using calligraphy techniques learned in class
  • Use geometric shapes (triangle, square, circle), value (highlights, shadows), and form (two dimensional, three dimensional) based on Pakistani Artist (1988-Present) Haider Ali
  • Make social studies connections (transforming vehicles, society values, cultural heritage) and design principles (variation, composition, value) inspired by South Asia Art 
  • Define Popular Culture (cultural activities or commercial products aimed at the tastes of the public)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Pakistani Artist (1988-Present) Haider Ali

3. Discussion Questions "What purpose does this kind of public folk art serve? What value does it have in society? What feelings do the decorative designs on these vehicles evoke? Why would someone spend so much money to decorate his or her truck?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" by 15" White Drawing Paper
2. Use geometric shapes (triangle, circle, rectangle) to draw exterior truck outline 
3. Draw main parts (wheels, cab, hood, grille, headlights) inside of truck outline

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Pakistani Truck Art for assigned table 
2. Watch "Moving Canvases Truck Art" by Eckova Productions
3. Discussion Questions "In what ways, though, could a vehicle be considered a work of art? What is the most artistic vehicle you have ever seen? Why did drivers begin decorating their trucks and busses? How do the different regions impact the way the vehicles are decorated? Based on the images you see, what kinds of materials do you think are used to decorate the vehicle?"

Lesson Activities 

1. Outline & Trace over truck outline with Black Sharpie Marker
2. Add decorative patterns (dots, stripes, lines) on exterior truck drawing
3. Add symbols (vivid memories, storytelling, different cultures) to exterior of truck drawing

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Pakistani Truck Art for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (watercolor, paint brushes, buckets)

Lesson Activities

1. Use watercolor to fill in the positive space of their exterior truck drawing
2. Use watercolor to fill in the negative space of their exterior truck drawing
2. Add highlights/shadows with colored pencils to their Pakistani Truck Art
