YELLOW DUCK COLLAGES

 Yellow Duck Collages

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Yellow Duck Collage using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic, free form), line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), and texture (actual, implied, visual) inspired by Georgian-Russian-American Sculptor (1900-1974) Peter Ganine
  • Use collage techniques (photocollage, decoupage, fabric collage) and design principles (movement, proportion, variation) based on Vintage Art
  • Define Collage (a piece of art made by sticking various materials (photographs, fabric, scrap paper0 together)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Rubber Duck (1947) Peter Ganine

2. Read Let's Learn About The Rubber Ducky by Play Street Museum

3.  Discussion Questions "Can a duck be art? What is the name of this duck? What sort of adventure could this duck have? what happens to the ducks when they are filled with water? How can you help the rubber duck sink? What would happen if I put this duck in the tub of water, will it sink or will it float? Have you ever placed a rubber duck into the water? What happened? How are these objects that float? What do you notice about the movement of the ducks? Are there any waves? What do you think will happen to the duck's movement since it was not swimming? Will the duck stay in the same place in the water? What is something that would be needed for it to be moved to a different place? What did you notice about your duck when the waves were made?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Painting Paper

2. Draw three thumbnail sketches of ducks using observational drawing skills (contour, outline, continuous) for duck paintings

3. Add details (reflective light, light source) to negative space (background) of the Yellow Duck Collages

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Yellow Duck Collages for Assigned Tables

2. Rubber Duck (2009) Florentijn Hofman

3. Discussion Questions "What hobbies or interests do you have that could be turned into a career someday? What characteristics did the artists have that made her a successful artist? Which countries would you like to visit and why? What styles do you like best, and why? Are there things you appreciate about each style? How many eggs do ducks lay a year? Dod ducks need water to swim in? What is the best way to carry a duck? Are adult ducks noisy? What are ducks? What is a duck bill? What do duck's feet look like? Do ducks have waterproof feathers? What differentiates the duck from most other birds? How many species of ducks are there? Where will you not find ducks? How big are ducks? Is there a difference in the coloring of a ducks? How does a duck manage to fly after swimming?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use drawing techniques (contour, outline, continuous) to add basic shapes (circle oval rectangle) to the duck paintings

2. Use design principles (composition, repetition, gradation) to fill in the positive space (duck) of the duck paintings

3. Use drawing techniques (contour, outline, continuous) to add patterns (loops, swirls, waves) to the positive space (duck) of the Yellow Duck Collages

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Yellow Duck Collages for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (construction paper, speed ball ink, scissors, glue sticks)

Lesson Activities

1. Use complementary colors (red green, blue orange, yellow purple) to fill in the positive space (duck) of the duck paintings

2. Use complementary colors (red green, blue orange, yellow purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the duck paintings

3. Add design details (shadows, reflective light) to the negative space (background) of the Yellow Duck Collages
