 Clay Personified Pop Tarts

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Clay Personified Pop Tarts using ceramic techniques learned in class
  • Use texture (actual, visual, implied), color combinations (earth tones, complementary colors, analogous colors), and shape variation (geometric, organic, free form) based on Contemporary Artists (1986-Present) Lucy Sparrow
  • Use sculpture techniques (carving, casting, modeling, assembling, coiling, armature) and design principles (proportion, rhythm, emphasis) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Personification (assigning human traits and emotions to non-human objects)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Feltz Bagels (2023) Lucy Sparrow

2. Food Stories: Remember The Co-Creator Of The Pop Tart by Mary Louise Kelly and Juana Summers

3. Discussion Questions "If a pop tart could talk, what would it say? What color is your pop tart? How will you show different expressions on your pop tart? Why is learning how to make ceramics an important life skill we need every day? How do humans benefit from building fine motor skills and dexterity from handling small tasks? Did you know the pop tart was released in 1964 in four flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant? Would you eat a three-foot-tall pop tart instead of cake at a birthday party? Did you know the inventor of the pop tart William Post had POPTART written on his license plate?"

Which of these artworks best shows a sculpture technique? What is an armature in sculpture? Which design principle shows repeated patterns? What type of shape would this straight-edged pop tart be? Why is breakfast important for students? What does contemporary art mean? What is an example of emphasis in art? Which part of a pop tart would show actual texture? If you were making a strawberry pop tart character, which would be an analogous color combination? What type of clay technique would you use to make the flat base of the pop tart character?"
