VAN GOGH SUNFLOWERS

Van Gogh Sunflowers

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create a Sunflower Still Life using impasto techniques learned in class
  • Use texture (dots, dabs, swirls), value (light/dark of color) and space (positive/negative) 
  • Use Design Principles (movement, composition, gradation) to replicate art making approaches from the Post-Impressionist Art Movement
  • Define Texture (refers to the visual "feel" of a picture)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start 

1. Three Sunflowers (1888) Vincent Van Gogh                Six Sunflowers (1888) Vincent Van Gogh

2. Vincent Van Gogh Biography- Introduction for Children

3. Discussion Questions "Van Gogh was an artist who used a lot of texture in his paintings. He painted so thick! He needed a lot of paint for this! Sometimes he would buy paint instead of food! What do you notice about his still life? Why do you think Vincent Van Gogh painted sunflowers?"

Lesson Activities:

1. Use a Paper Plate to trace a blossom head for each sunflower
2. Use a Petal Template to draw the ray flowers/clusters of each sunflower
3. Add Different Lines (curved, straight, narrow) to form a stem for each sunflower

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Sunflower Still Life for Assigned Table
2. Camille And The Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt
3. Discussion Questions "What do you know about Vincent Van Gogh? What has someone laughed at that made you sad? What makes you different from everyone else? Texture- refers to the visual "feel" of a picture. What do you feel when you look at Vincent Van Gogh's paintings?"

Lesson Activities:

1.  Add Earth Tones (yellow, orange, browns) to ray flowers/clusters and blossom head of the sunflowers
2. Add Cool Colors (Light Blue, Dark Blue) to background of sunflowers
3. Sign Your Name in the bottom of the sunflower vase
