SCRATCH ART OWLS
Learning Targets
I can...- Create a Scratchboard Owl using graphic techniques (engraving, carving, scratching) learning in class
- Use line (parallel, intersecting, straight), value (shadows, highlights) and texture (feathered, stippled, smooth) to reproduce artistic style of Kerri Ambrosino
- Make scientific connections (nocturnal animals, bird anatomy, surrounding habitats) and use design principles (composition, gradation, proportion) relating to Mexican Folk Art
- Define Engrave (cut or carve on the surface of an object)
Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Nocturnal- actively hunting prey in the darkness. Owls have binocular vision, binaural hearing, sharp talons, and feathers adapted for silent flight. Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Scratchboard Owl for Assigned Table2. Bruja Witch Owl (2017) Kerri Ambrosino
3. Stylus- ancient writing implement for scratching. Ancient civilizations used these tools to engrave or trace letters onto wax-covered tablets. Stylus are used to create accurate lines, surface texture, and highly detailed illustrations on scratchboard.
Lesson Activities
1. Draw a light outline of the selected owl onto ones scratchboard2. Use graphic techniques (engrave, carve, scratch) with a stylus to add sharp talons, forward-facing eyes, hawk-like beak, and hair-like feathers to their owl
3. Add value (highlights, shadows) to selected owl by revealing white layers underneath
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Scratchboard Owl for Assigned Table2. Set Up Studio Area (Stylus, Indian Ink, Colored Pencil)
Lesson Activities
1. Use graphic techniques (engrave, carve, scratch) with a stylus to finish adding sharp talons, forward-facing eyes, hawk-like beak, and hair-like feathers to their owl2. Add value (highlights, shadows) to selected owl by revealing white layers underneath
3. Add final details using illustrative techniques (hatching, stippling) to final Scratchboard Owl
