MIXED MEDIA BUTTERFLIES

Mixed Media Butterflies

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a Mixed Media Butterfly using mark making techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), analogous colors (red yellow orange; green blue purple), and implied texture (soft rough) inspired by American Artist (1928-1987) Andy Warhol
  • Use design principles (balance, repetition, emphasis) relating to the Pop Art Movement
  • Define Symmetrical (same on both sides)

Day One, Art Start

1. Butterflies (1955) Andy Warhol
2. Read Monarch and Milkweed by Helen Frost
3. Discussion Questions "What is the most important part of a painting? What types of shapes can you use to break up your drawing? Could you follow their migration path on a map? Why would butterflies and birds go south for the winter? When do you think they will migrate back north? Which wing looks transparent like you're looking through the wing of an insect?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" by 15" Scrapbook Page
2. Trace two different Butterfly Template lightly around white paper
3. Outline & Trace Butterfly Templates with Black Sharpie Marker

Reminder:
  • Initials & Home Teacher on Back of Paper

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Media Butterfly for Assigned Table
2. Happy Butterfly Day (1955) Andy Warhol
3. Discussion Questions "Symmetrical- same on both sides. Why are butterflies so colorful? Which butterfly is bigger, the male or female? What are some differences between moths and butterflies? Do butterflies and moths look the same on both sides? Why are butterflies symmetrical? Why do butterflies have dust on their wings?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add line variation (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) to create patterns within the butterfly template
2. Use analogous colors (blue, purple, red) to fill in the positive space of the butterfly
3. Add implied texture (cloth, cotton, fur) inside their Mixed Media Butterflies

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Media Butterfly for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (scissors, glue sticks, scrap paper)

Lesson Activities

1. Add embellishments (acrylic gems, rhinestones, pebbles) to butterflies
2. Glue Down two different butterfly templates to colorful Scrapbook Pages
3. Use analogous colors (orange, yellow, green) to fill in the negative space of their Mixed Media Butterflies
