DAVID HOCKNEY INSPIRED LANDSCAPES

David Hockney Inspired Landscapes

Learning Targets 

I can...
  • Create a David Hockney Landscape using photo joiner techniques (overlapping, layering, cropping) learned in class
  • Use complimentary colors (red green, blue orange, yellow purple), line types (horizon line, diagonal, horizontal), and organic shapes (hills, mountains, clouds) relating to British Contemporary Artist (1937-Present) David Hockney
  • Use design principles (contrast, placement, balance) inspired by 20th Century Art Movements
  • Define Media Handling (how the artist has used subject matter, media, and inspirational sources to influence viewers) 

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start 

1. Garrowby Hill (1998) David Hockney
2. Read Informational Book "David Hockney: A Bigger Picture" by Tim Barringer
3. Discussion Questions "What is going on in this picture? Who is David Hockney and how did his artwork set him apart? How has Hockney created this painting? What mediums and processes has he used? What art elements and principles has Hockney used in his painting? Where can you see them? What inspiration comes to mind from this painting?"

Lesson Activities 

1. Use a ruler, compass, or straightedge to draw the scenery of the landscape drawing 
2. Add details (building, animal, plants) within the scenery of the landscape drawing
3. Use colored sharpies to outline the foreground, middle ground, and background

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve David Hockney Landscape for Assigned Table
2. Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica (1990) David Hockney
3. Discussion Questions "What can you see? What do you think the meaning behind this image is? How does this image make you feel? What do you like about the image? What are some art elements and principles you can see? How does Hockney use brushes or tools to show all the visual elements in his paintings? How will you compose your section? How will your section fit into the big picture? How is this painting inspiring your own work?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add patterns (stars, stripes, swirls) in the scenery of landscape paintings 
2. Use complimentary colors (green red, blue orange, yellow purple) to fill in background
3. Use complimentary colors (green red, blue orange, yellow purple) to fill in foreground

Day Three, Art Start 

1. Retrieve David Hockney Landscape for Assigned table
2. Set Up Studio Area (washable markers, sharpies, pens)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (sunlight, reflection) within the scenery of landscape paintings
2. Add shadows (shade, shadows) within the scenery of landscape paintings
3. Add details (snowflakes, tractors, animals) within the scenery of landscape paintings
