- Use drawing techniques (contour line, horizon line, cross hatching) and design principles (placement, movement, proportion) based on the Neoclassical Art Movement
- Define Movement (path the viewer's eye takes through the work of art)
Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. White House (1762-1831) James Hoban
2. Read Madeline at the White House by John Bemelmans Marciano
3. Discussion Questions "What are the roles of the president and cabinet? Can you research information about the branch of government that is centered in the United States White House? What would you do if you lived in the White House? What is the purpose of the White House? Why is the Why House white? How did the White House get its name? Has the White House ever been renovated or changed? How was the location of the White House selected? Who was the only president not to live in the White House? What is it like to live at the White House?"
Lesson Activities
1. Choose 12" by 15" Drawing Paper
2. Add horizon line in the middle ground to separate the background (sky) from the foreground (building, landscape) in the drawing
3. Add scenery (fountain, black fence, trees) to the foreground (landscape) of the White House Drawings

Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve White House Drawing for Assigned Table
2. White House (1901) Frederick D. Owen
3. Discussion Questions "How big is the White House? What are the dimensions of the Oval Office? What are some interesting facts about presidents and First Ladies? Which first day began the tradition of decorating the White House at Halloween? Which administration holds the record for the number of Christmas trees displayed at the White House? In what year was electricity installed in the White House? Who was the only president to not live in the White House? When did the White House first get plumbing? What is the Resolute Desk and where did it come from?"
Lesson Activities
1. Add architectural features (windows, pillars, roadway) to middle ground (building) of the building drawings
2. Add details (clouds, bushes, birds) to background (sky) of the building drawing
3. Use black sharpie marker to outline the foreground, middle ground, and background of the White House Drawings
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve White House Drawing for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (Graphite Pencils, Sharpeners, Erasers)
Lesson Activities
1. Use graphite pencil to fill in the positive space (windows, pillars, roadway) of the building drawing
2. Use graphite pencil to fill in the negative space (clouds, birds) of the building drawings
3. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) and shadows (cast shadows, shadow) to the White House Drawings
