- Define Still Life (a drawing of arranged objects)
Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Sunflowers (1888) Vincent Van Gogh2. Read Camille and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt
3. Reflective Discussion Questions "If you could ask Vincent Van Gogh one question, what would it have been? What is Vincent Van Gogh famous for? How does understanding an artist change our understanding of his paintings? What made Vincent Van Gogh unique? What can we learn from Vincent Van Gogh? How did Vincent Van Gogh paint? Why did Vincent Van Gogh begin painting? Why is Vincent Van Gogh important to art history? Why is Vincent Van Gogh considered one of the best painters the world has ever seen?"
Lesson Activities
1. Choose 12" X 15" Drawing Paper2. Add three dimensional shapes (cylinder, pyramid, sphere) to composition of arranged objects (vase, flowers, wallpaper)
3. Add an horizon line in the background to separate the wallpaper, objects, and flowers

Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Sunflower Still Life for Assigned Table
2. Three Sunflowers (1888) Vincent Van Gogh
3. Discussion Questions "Was Van Gogh an expressionist? Did Van Gogh fail to paint a subject that was on his to-do list? What are the stylistic differences between Van Gogh's work? Why did Van Gogh create multiple paintings of (old) shoes? Which year was best for Van Gogh, in terms of his art? Did any of Vincent's childhood drawings stand the test of time? What are we yet to discover about Vincent Van Gogh? How long did it take Vincent Van Gogh to complete a painting? Why does Van Gogh's work have a lifelike quality?"
Lesson Activities
1. Use warm colors (red, yellow, orange) to fill in the positive space (flowers) of the still life
2. Use cool colors (blue, green, purple) to fill in the negative space (wallpaper) of the still life
3. Use oil pastels to add texture (rough, smooth) to the Sunflower Still Life
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Sunflower Still Life for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (tempera paint, water bucket, paint brushes)

2. Add shadows (cast shadows, shadow) to background (wallpaper, table) of still life
3. Outline details (objects, fruit, texture) in foreground (vase, flowers) of Sunflower Still Life
