Colored Pencil Color Wheel
Learning Targets
- Create an original Colored Pencil Color Wheel using drawing techniques learned in class
- Use color order (red orange yellow green blue purple), line variation (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), and space (positive, negative) inspired by American Artist (1977-Present) Ben Steele
- Use drawing techniques (perspective, still life, contour line) and design principles (composition, repetition, gradation) based on American Art
- Define Color Wheel (a circle showing the relationship between colors)
Day One, Art Start
1. I Love You Too... (2015) Ben Steele
2. Read Mixed: A Colorful Story by Arree Chung
3. Discussion Questions "What is color? How do we represent and create color? What colors do you see? What is your favorite color? What do you think the most common favorite color in the world is? How do colors change the feeling of an artwork?"
Lesson Activities
- Choose 12" by 12" Drawing Paper
- Draw three thumbnail sketches of art supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils) using observational drawing skills (perspective, contour, still life) for color wheel drawing
- Add details (wax, wooden, bristles) to positive space (art supplies) of color wheel drawings
Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Colored Pencil Color Wheel for Assigned Table
2. Seurat's Dots (2005) Ben Steele
3. Discussion Questions "Why are color wheels important? What is a color? What are primary colors? What are secondary colors? What color can not be made by mixing any other color? What do we call color choices that are used in design plans? What is a circular chart used for showing color relationships? What is the name of colors that are different in lightness and darkness? Which of the following are examples of cool colors? Which of the following are examples of warm colors? What are tertiary colors? How do you make a shade? Which colors give the greatest contrast? What words are used to describe color temperature? How many colors are on the basic color wheel?"
Lesson Activities
1. Use drawing techniques (still life, perspective, contour) to add basic shapes (cone, cylinder, circle) of colored pencils to color wheel drawing
2. Use design principles (composition, repetition, gradation) to fill in the positive space (art supplies) of the color wheel drawing
3. Use drawing techniques (still life, perspective, contour) to add details (wood, bristles, wax) to color wheel drawing
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Colored Pencil Color Wheel for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (colored pencils, erasers, sharpeners)
Lesson Activities
1. Use color order (red orange yellow green blue purple) to fill in the positive space (art supplies) of the color wheel drawing
2. Use color order (red orange yellow green blue purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the color wheel drawing
3. Add design details (wood, bristles, wax) to negative space (background) of the Colored Pencil Color Wheel
