MONTY MONTGOMERY ABSTRACT ART

 Monty Montgomery Abstract Art

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Monty Montgomery Abstract Art using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), shape variation (geometric organic free form), and space (positive negative) inspired by American Artist (1998-Present) Monty Montgomery
  • Use art element shape (geometric organic free form) and design principles (composition movement variation) inspired by Contemporary Art
  • Define Abstract (using shape form color and line to create a composition that references parts of the world)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. The Ray Series #16 (2013) Monty Montgomery

2.  Read World Of Art: Abstract Art Second Edition by Anna Moszynska

3. Discussion Questions "What does art mean to you? What ideas, concerns, or objectives have motivated your work? How would you describe our artistic style? What artistic movements or artist have influenced you? What sets you apart from other artists? What is success or successful for you? Is there a distinct mood? Does it make you think about anything? Does anything jump out at you? What did the artist say about the piece? How did you start out as an artist? When do you feel your best? Do you struggle with comparison to other artists? If so, how are you able to move past this? What do your paintings reveal about your personality? Where or how do you rediscover inspiration? Who is the artist shown above?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Drawing Paper

2. Draw three line types (contour continuous outline) as a design for the abstract art

3. Outline three line types (contour continuous outline) with black oil pastel for the Monty Montgomery Abstract Art

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Monty Montgomery Abstract Art for Assigned Table

2. Moment #15 (2015) Monty Montgomery

3. Discussion Questions "When was this piece created? What events were happening in the world at the time when the work was created? Where is the art piece located? How is the location of the artwork significant? What is the subject matter? Who is the artist? What was the artist known for? What colors are prominent throughout the piece? Where can you see movement being represented? How does that artwork feel balanced or unbalanced? Where are the areas of the high or low contrast? What media was used to create it? What equipment would have been needed to create it? How long do you think it would have taken the artist to create it?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use drawing techniques (contour line outline) to add basic shapes (geometric organic free form) to the positive space (foreground) of the abstract art

2. Use drawing techniques (contour line outline) to add basic shapes (geometric organic free form) to the negative space (background) of the abstract art

3. Use drawing techniques (contour line outline) to add details (pattern repetition) to the Monty Montgomery Abstract Art

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Monty Montgomery Abstract Art for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (chalk oil pastels pencils)

Lesson Activities

1. Use complementary colors (red green; blue orange; yellow purple) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the abstract art

2. Use complementary colors (red green; blue orange; yellow purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the abstract art

3.  Add design details (geometric shapes, border) to the positive space (foreground) of the Monty Montgomery Abstract Art
