CLOWN FISH PAINTINGS

 Clown Fish Paintings

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Clown Fish Painting using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), color theory (warm colors, cool colors), and space (positive negative) inspired by Russian Artist (2010-Present) Irina Sztukowski
  • Use painting techniques (brush strokes, layering, dry brush) and design principles (repetition movement composition) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Seascape (a photograph or painting depicting the expanse sea)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Clown Fish And Angelfish In Corals (2020) Irina Sztukowski

2. Read A Swim Through The Sea by Kristin Joy Pratt

3. Discussion Questions "Where would you go diving to see a clownfish? In an aquarium, what other type of fish could you keep with a clownfish? What is the invertebrate called that the clownfish hides in and lives in? What colors are most species of clownfish? What country's seas would you not find a clown fish in? What types of lines do you see on the clown fish? Which is not a real clownfish? What would you not see a clown fish eat? Why don't clownfish get stung by sea anemones? Where do clownfish live? Are clown fish small, medium, or large in size? What do you like about clown fish?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use a pencil to draw shape variation (geometric organic free form) of the selected fish (clown fish) for clown fish paintings

2. Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to add characteristics (gills eyes fins) for clown fish paintings

3. Use texture tools (stamps felt pens forks) to add patterns (dots stripes swirls) for Clown Fish Paintings

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Clown Fish Paintings for Assigned Table

2. Under The Sea Clownfish And Angelfish (2020) Irina Sztukowski

3. Discussion Questions "How would you describe the shape of the fishes body? Are all of the fish shaped the same? Do you see any fins on this fish? How would you describe this fish's shape? How would you describe the color of this fish? Are all the fish the same color? How are these fish the same? How are these fish different? Do you see any design on this fish? Do you see any patterns on this fish? Do you see any fins on this fish? Are the fins the same size? Are some narrow? Are some wide? How would you describe its fins? How would you describe its mouth? How would you describes its eyes?"

1. Use warm colors (red orange yellow) to fill in the positive space (clown fish) of the clown fish paintings

2. Use cool colors (purple blue green) to fill in the negative space (background) of the clown fish paintings

3. Add line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to negative space (background) of the Clown Fish Paintings

 Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Clown Fish Paintings for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (water bucket, paint brushes watercolor)

Lesson Activities 

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) to positive space (clown fish) of clown fish paintings

2. Add shadows (cast shadow, reflective shadow) to negative space (background) of the clown fish paintings 

3. Add relief pieces (styrofoam pieces, cardboard, poster board) behind the fish and rocks of the Clown Fish Paintings
