Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Sound of Trumpets (1910-1911) Wassily Kandinsky
2. Read Duke Ellington by Andrea Davis
3. Discussion Questions "Why are trumpets considered an ancient instrument that holds symbolic meaning? what is the historical symbolism and meaning behind these trumpet paintings? Why have trumpets historically been made from brass? Why are some artist inspired to create art based on music? What types of lines and colors would someone most likely use to portray upbeat jazz music? What would you say is the connection between music and art? How can art represent music if you cannot physically hear a work of art?"
Lesson Activities
1. Choose 12" X 15" Painting Paper
2. Add line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) to the positive space (trumpet) of the trumpet paintings
3. Outline positive space (trumpet) with metallic colors (silver, gold, copper, bronze) of the Mixed Media Trumpets
Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Mixed Media Trumpets for Assigned Table
2. Trumpet (1984) Jean Michel Basquiat
3. Discussion Questions "How do people express meaning through music and art? How do people interpret meaning in music and in art? How does music and art reflect the time and place in which it was created? What factors influence an artist's work? How can music or art communicate a theme? Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Mixed Media Trumpets for Assigned Tables
2. Set Up Studio Area (paintbrushes, water buckets, oil pastels)

1. Add highlights (light source, reflective light) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the trumpet paintings
2. Add shadows (reflective shadows, cast shadows) to fill in the negative space (background) of the trumpet paintings
