Natalia Ostapenko Symmetrical Compositions
Learning Targets
I can...
- Create an original Natalia Ostapenko Symmetrical Composition using painting techniques learned in class
- Use line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), shape variation (geometric, organic), and value (tints, shades) inspired by Ukrainian Artist (1990-Present) Natalia Ostapenko
- Use painting techniques (luminosity, opaque, transparent) and design principles (composition, gradation, repetition) based on Abstract Art
- Define Warm & Cool Colors (warm colors- red, yellow, orange; cool colors- blue, green purple)
Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. L'Aurore (2020) Natalia Ostapenko
2. Read Summertime by Contemporart Magazine
3. Discussion Questions "What is abstract art? What do you think abstract means? Can you recognize anything in this painting? Which work is abstract? What makes these paintings alike? Is art the idea or is art the final product? What do you see? What does this work of art remind you of? What do you think this work of art is made of? Where would you display this work of art? Why? Does this work follow any mathematical principles? What types of math tools- geometry, permutations, etc.- do you think were used? Are both of these artworks three dimensional solids? How would you describe the pattern? How many faces does it have? What is the space of each face?"
Lesson Activities
1. Choose 12" X 15" Painting Paper
2. Draw three line types (contour, continuous, outline) as a design for the abstract composition
3. Outline the three line types (contour, continuous, outline) with black oil pastel for the Natalia Ostapeko Symmetrical Compositions
Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Natalia Ostapenko Symmetrical Compositions for Assigned Tables
2. Hemispheres (2021) Natalia Ostapenko
3. Discussion Questions "Is there a distinct mood? What do you notice about the colors, shapes, Ines, and textures? Does it make you think of anything? Does anything jump out of at you? Does this work create a strong emotional response? What did the artist say about the piece? What events are happening in the world at the time this piece was created? What are the five elements of abstract art? Does this work introduce a thought, concept, idea, or make you think on a higher level?"
Lesson Activities
1. Use drawing techniques (contour, continuous, outline) to add basic shapes (geometric, organic) to the positive space (foreground) of the abstract compositions
2. Use drawing techniques (contour, continuous, outline) to add basic shapes (geometric, organic) to the negative space (background) of the abstract compositions
3. Use drawing techniques (contour, continuous, outline) to add details (pattern, repetition, texture) to the Natalia Ostapenko Symmetrical Compositions
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Natalia Ostapenko Symmetrical Compositions for Assigned Tables
2. Set Up Studio Area (paint brushes, tempera paint, water buckets)
Lesson Activities
1. Use complementary colors (red green; blue orange; purple yellow) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the abstract compositions
2. Use complementary colors (red green; blue orange; purple yellow) to fill in the negative space (background) of the abstract compositions
3. Add design details (geometric shapes, decorative borders) to the positive space (foreground) of the Natalia Ostapenko Symmetrical Compositions
