SHEEP LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS

Sheep Landscape Paintings

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Sheep Landscape Painting using painting techniques learned in class
  • Use space (foreground, middle ground, background), line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), and texture (fur, cloth, grass) inspired by French Artist (1822-1899) Rosa Bonheur
  • Use landscape elements (horizon line, perspective, near/far) and design principles (composition, movement, gradation) based on Realism
  • Define Horizon Line (the point where the earth meets the sky)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Sheep In A Landscape (1888) Rosa Bonheur

2. Read Rosa Bonheur by Rosalia Shriver

3. Discussion Questions "Can you imagine having to get written permission from the police to dress in the kind of clothes you want to wear? By wearing long pants and short cropped hair, Rosa Bonheur was able to paint sheep, cattle, and cows. Can you find some of these animals in this drawing of her studio? Would you like to see her portrait? Which animal will be featured? Where do you see dark colors? If we divided this painting right down the middle, would the two sides balance each other? How did she paint the soft texture of sheep to make it look realistic? What would you say is the main subject of this painting besides the land?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use ruler, compass, or straightedge to draw the scenery (background, foreground middle ground) of the landscape painting

2. Add details (building, animals, plants) with the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the landscape paintings

3. Use colored sharpies to outline the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the Sheep Landscape Paintings

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Sheep Landscape Paintings for Assigned Tables

2. Sheep By The Sea (1899) Rosa Bonheur

3. Discussion Questions "Are farmers as important in this painting? In what direction do your eyes move in this composition? Where does texture catch your eye? How does that textured area contrast with other parts of the painting? Would the size make the sheep seem even more lifelike? Do you see more straight or curved lines in this painting? What other details in this painting show movement? Do you remember the art term we learned that means light and dark contrast in a work of art? Do you think a sheep would be a good pet for your home?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add patterns (swirls, clouds, stars) into the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the landscape paintings

2. Use complimentary colors (green red, blue orange, yellow purple) to fill in the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the landscape paintings

3. Use complimentary colors (green red, blue orange, yellow purple) to fill in the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the Sheep Landscape Paintings

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Sheep Landscape Paintings for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (glue sticks, cotton balls, tempera paint)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (sunlight, reflection) within the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the landscape paintings

2. Add shadows (cast shadow, reflective shadow) within the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the landscape paintings

3.  Add details (animals, people, buildings) within the scenery (foreground, middle ground, background) of the Sheep Landscape Paintings
