 Patty Baker Sunset Landscapes

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Patty Baker Sunset Landscapes using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), color combinations (analogous, complementary, secondary) and shape variation (geometric, organic, free form) inspired by Contemporary Artist (2004-Present) Patty Baker
  • Use landscape elements (horizon line, foreground, middle ground, background) and design principles (composition, movement, gradation) based on Contemporary Art

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. The Gathering At Sunset (2004) Patty Baker

2. Read Artist Workshop: Landscapes by Clare king & Penny Roundhill

3. Discussion Questions "What are the three parts of landscape paintings? What do you see? What do you think it would sound like in this place? What do you think it would smell like in this place? Is the painting warm or cold? What season do you think it is? What would you do if you were in this painting? How does it make you feel? Do you hear sounds? What are the different areas (foreground, middle ground, background) in this painting? What objects, shapes, or colors can you find in these different fields? How did the artist make these paintings? Where do they do the work? Did they imagine this landscape painting? Is this a place that you would want to visit? What would you wear if you were visiting this landscape? Why or why not?"

What times are there when artists might work indoors? Do artists that work outside have a table to work on? What do artists who work outside do about wind and weather? What might you smell in this landscape? What do you hear in this landscape? what do you see in the background far away? What are the different colors and feelings used for different seasonal landscapes? What seems natural in the landscape? What seems manmade in the landscape? If you could enter into the scene in the work, where would you be located? Does the artist give you a natural path to follow through the landscape?"
