 Shinique Smith Inspired Paintings

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Shinique Smith Inspired Painting using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), shape variation (geometric, organic, free form), and texture (cloth, burlap, scrapbook paper) inspired by American Artist (1971-Present) Shinique Smith
  • Use fabric techniques (wrapping, stuffing, tying, tearing) and design principles (emphasis, repetition, movement) based on American Art
  • Define Social Art (practice involving using art mediums to focus on engagement through human interaction and social discourse)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Open Secret (2020) Shinique Smith

3. Discussion Questions "What is the meaning behind this artwork? Where did this clothing come from? Where will this clothing end up? Have you heard of the artist Shinique Smith? How early in life do people discover the value of the arts? What experiences in the artist's youth or young adult life influence this artwork? How important is environment or surroundings to paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations? What do you feel is the role of art? What is the role of an artist in public discourse about education and social justice? What story does this art's work tell? Can you explain the reoccurring themes in this artist's work? With recent conversations on the value of Arts Education, how do you define success personally? Does one need to go to school to become an artist?"

Is there a distinct mood? Does it make you think about anything? Does anything jump out at you? What did the artist say about the piece? How did you start out as an artist? When do you feel your best? Do you struggle with comparison to other artists? If so, how are you able to move past this? What do your paintings reveal about your personality? Where or how to you rediscover inspiration? Who is the artist shown above?"
