HAYSTACK SERIES

HAYSTACK SERIES

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a Haystack Series using color mixing techniques learned in class
  • Use color (primary, secondary), shape (organic, geometric), and value (light/dark of color)
  • Use Design Principles (composition, repetition, balance) and Scientific Connections (seasons, rule of thirds, light effects) to discuss the Impressionist Art Movement
  • Define Impressionism (turning art from being about powerful rich and elite to capturing a moment of ordinary people and everyday life)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Haystacks at Giverny (1885) Claude Monet

2. Monet Paints A Day by Julie Danneberg & Caitlin Heimer

3. Discussion Questions "Monet painted many series of paintings- bridges, cathedrals, haystacks, and gardens. These paintings portrayed the same subject at different times of day, time, or year. Monet explored the effects of light on his subject. Why do you think Monet decided to stop at 25 haystacks, 30 Rouen Cathedrals, and 250 water lilies? Why might an artist paint the same thing more than once? Why do you think the artist was thinking about when he painted it? If you set out to work on a series of paintings, how do you know when you are done?"

Lesson Activities:

1. Divide Canvas into four quadrilateral parts (time of day, seasons)
2. Use Rule of Thirds and Observational Techniques to draw four haystacks
3. Add directional lines (diagonal, horizontal, vertical) to remember light source

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Haystack Series for Assigned Table
2. Grainstack (Sunset) (1891) Claude Monet
3. Impressionism-turned art from being about powerful, rich, and elite to capturing a moment of ordinary people and everyday places. Impressionism was a reference to Monet's Painting "Impression Sunrise 1872"

Lesson Activities

1. Recreate four haystacks drawings from observational photographs
2. Use Rule of Thirds, Light Effects, and different seasons to make four paintings
3. Use different painting techniques (foundation work, side-to-side brushstrokes, building texture) to add color

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Haystack Series for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Space (tempera paint, paintbrushes, water bucket, paper towel)

Lesson Activities

1. Finish using painting techniques (foundation work, side-to-side brushstrokes, building texture) to add color
2. Add additional light effects and different seasons to haystack series
3. Organize Collection (four paintings) by medium usage, subject matter, or placement
