- Use design principles (proportion, composition, contrast) based on Classic Monster Movies
- Define Portrait (a picture of the face, head, and shoulders)
Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Figures And Dog In Front of the Sun (1949) Joan Miro2. Read A Monster Mash by Mimi Maxwell
3. Discussion Questions "Will your monster be mean, nice, silly, scary, or happy? How do you make a scary mouth? What do you silly eyes look like? What type of pattern will you add onto the monster? Are monsters real? Where do monsters live? Will you ever meet one? What role do monsters play in various cultures and how are they reflected in various art forms? How have monsters been viewed, what purpose do they served, and why are they necessary?"
Lesson Activities
1. Choose 12" by 15" Drawing Paper2. Use pencil to add a contour line of facial proportions (head, shoulder, face) of monster drawings
3. Use pencil to add facial features (eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows) of Monster Mash

Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Monster Mash for Assigned Table2. Art of Maurice Sendak (1980) Tony Kushner
3. Discussion Questions "How does the monster look? What are some things you might do if you were in the same situation? Could this book be a story that someone made up? If you think a monster is nearby, what could you do? How many eyes will your monster have? Will your monster have sharp teeth or claws? What color will your monster be?"
Lesson Activities
1. Add adornments (hairstyles, piercings, tattoos) to positive space (face, nose, shoulder) of monster drawings2. Add costumes (jewelry, clothing, make up) to positive space (facial feature) of monster drawings
3. Use black sharpie marker to outline facial features and facial proportions of Monster Mash
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Monster Mash for Assigned Table2. Set Up Studio Area (water color pencils, water bucket, paintbrush)
Lesson Activities
1. Use neutral colors to fill in the positive space (face, nose, shoulder) of monster drawings2. Use watercolor pencils to fill in negative space (background, landscape) of monster drawings
3. Use value (lightness/darkness of color) to add shadows/highlights to Monster Mash
