POST IT NOTE MURAL

Post It Note Mural

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a collaborative Post It Note Mural using assemblage techniques learned in class
  • Use neon colors (purple, yellow, blue, pink), space (positive, negative), and shape (geometric, organic) inspired by Early Roman Mosaic Designs and American Artist (2001-Present) Christian Faur
  • Use design principles (composition, gradation, balance) and mathematical connections (straight edge, square grid, two-dimensional shape) based on Ancient Art
  • Define Mosaic (a picture or patterned arranged by using small colored pieces- stone, tile, glass, paper)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

3. Discussion Questions "How were mosaics created in Roman days? What did Roman mosaics represent? Why are Roman mosaics important? What colors were used in Roman mosaics? What is a mosaic and what is tessera? What distinguishes the two types of Roman mosaics? How di the romans perfect the art form of mosaics? What images and scenes are shown in mosaics? What do roman mosaics reveal about ancient art? Which series of ancient mosaics were saved at the last minute before flood waters engulfed them? What are three common mosaic patterns?" 

Lesson Activities 

1. Choose One 3" by 3" Post It Note
2. Use a protractor, straight edge, and compass to draw lines to help divide the sections of each note location
3. Write Name on Two Individual Post It Notes before adding to Post It Note Mural

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve 3" by 3" Post It Note for Assigned Table
2. The Dance 1 (2006) Christian Faur
3. Discussion Questions "What stuck with you today? How can you make a difference? How can you use post it notes to change the climate in your school? Why not try a master painting together? How can we be engaged in this every class? What was your reaction to this artwork? If artwork could take, what would it say? What is missing from this artwork? What emotions do you feel when looking at this artwork? How do you think this artwork was used by the person who made it? What does this artwork say about the world we live in?"

Lesson Activities 

1. Fill in the positive space (facial features) with neon colors (pink, yellow, blue) of their Post It Note Mural 
2. Fill in the negative space (background, hair) with neutral colors (black, white, grey) of their Post It Note Mural
3. Write personal signature on two post it notes before adding these to the final Post It Note Mural

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve 3" by 3" Post It Note for Assigned Table
2. Set up Studio Area (glue sticks, pencils, post it notes)

Lesson Activities 

1. Outline personal signatures three times before gluing down post it note to Post It Note Mural
2. Use highlights (reflective light, light source) to fill in positive space of the Post It Note Mural
3. Use shadows (cast shadow, shadow) to fill in the negative space of the Post It Note Mural
