EXPRESSIVE PUMPKIN PATCH

Expressive Pumpkin Patch

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a colorful collage using techniques learned in class
  • Use line (thick, thin), shape (geometric, organic, free form), and texture (smooth, bumpy) to represent different gourds
  • Use design principles (composition, repetition, variation) to discuss Contemporary Art Movements
  • Define Expressive (convey a thought or feeling in a picture) 

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Caricature Carvings by Sculptor Jon Neil

  


2. Read "The Bumpy Little Pumpkin" by Margery Cuyler
3. Discussing Critical & Reflective Questions "What expressions will your pumpkin have? Will they be happy, scared, or serious? How do you show someone you are happy, mad, or sad?"

Lesson Activities 


1. Use three shapes (geometric, organic, free form) to create three different gourds (pumpkin, squash, zucchini)
2. Use design principles (composition, repetition, variation) to arrange the three arrange plants

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Colorful Collage for Assigned Table
2. Retrieve Pencil & Eraser
3. Expressive- means to convey a thought or feeling in a picture. How could you show that your pumpkin is happy, scared, or mad?

Lesson Activities:

1. Add Three Lines (Curved, Wavy, Straight) to help express Three Emotions (sad, happy, scared)
2. Use Black Sharpie Marker to trace Three Shapes & Line Types 
3. Use Color to add Pumpkin Parts (brown stems, green leaves, orange shell)

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Colorful Collage for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (scissors, glue stick, construction paper, pastel)

Lesson Activities:

1. Finish using Black Sharpie Marker to Trace Three Shapes & Line Types
2. Finish Using Color to add Pumpkin Parts (brown stems, green leaves, orange shell)
3. Use Texture Techniques (sponge, stencil, distress) to add details to their colorful collage
