GEL PRINT SNOW GLOBES

Gel Print Snow Globes

Learning Targets

 I can..

  • Create a Gel Print Snow Globe using printmaking techniques (engraving, superimposing, transferring) learning in class
  • Use warm/cool colors (red, yellow, orange; green, blue, purple) shape variation (free form, geometric, organic) and implied texture (smooth, rough, bumpy) relating to Austrian Inventor Erwin Perzy
  • Use design principles (variation, composition, contrast) inspired by 19th Century Art Movements
  • Define Engrave (cut or carve an image, design, or text onto the surface of an object)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Austrian Technical Mechanic Erwin Prezy
2. Read "The Snow Globe Family"by Jane O'Connor
3. Reflective Discussion "Erwin Perzy (1990) was a mechanic who accidentally created the first globe when trying to improve the brightness of electric light bulbs. He used white powder, semolina, and baby food soaked in water realizing the base of the snow globe would float. This magical effect reminded him of snowfall."

Lesson Activities

1. Draw a Winter Wonderland (pine trees, snow drifts, house) onto white cardstock
2. Cut the Winter Wonderland (pine trees, snow drifts, house) into Masks
3. Mix Warm Colors (red, orange yellow) for household and Cool Colors (blue, purple, pink) for environment

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Gel Print Snow Globe for Assigned Table
2. Read "The Snow Globe" by Sheila Roberts
3. Engrave- to cut or carve an image, design, or text onto the surface of an object. For years, snow globes have been passed from generation to generation always landing in the hands of a person in special need of a miracle. What is the story behind your snow globe?

Lesson Activities

1. Finish mixing Warm Colors (red, orange, yellow) & Cool Colors (green, blue, purple) for printmaking
2. Line Up Cardstock & Printing Paper with the Gel Printing Plate
3. Use Texture Tools to add designs into ink before printing the environment (trees, mountain tops, snow drifts)

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Gel Print Snow Globe for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (rollers, gel plates, speedball ink)

Lesson Activities

1. Use Embossing Folders to add wind lines, snow clouds, and sparkling stars in the night sky
2. Use permanent markers to add details (mountain top snow, windows, snowman) to Gel Print
3. Cut Out geometric shapes (circle, trapezoid, rectangle) for snow globe assemblage
