PERFECT DAY SNOW ANGELS

Perfect Day Snow Angels

Learning Targets

I can..
  • Create a Snow Angel using collage techniques (paper making, stamping, embroidery) learned in class
  • Use value (tints, shades), shape (free form, organic), and texture (implied, smooth, bumpy) relating to A Perfect Day by Carin Berger
  • Make mathematical connections (symmetry, pattern, extending lines) and design principles (balance, movement, composition) inspired by Children Book Illustrations
  • Define Tint (lighting of color by adding white)

Lesson One

Day One, Art Start

1. Snow Gear: (1) Coats & Jackets (2) Mittens & Gloves (3) Hats & Scarves
2. Read A Perfect Day by Carin Berger
3. Discussion Questions "What activities in the book look most fun to you? Can you relate to plowing through powdery show to make snowmen, snow angels, and snow forts? What would be a "perfect" snow day to you?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use Winter Coat, Flared Jacket, or Snowsuit Template for winter clothing
2. Add buttons, pockets, zippers, and pattern (plaid, stripes, solid) to winter clothing templates
3. Use Washable Markers to fill in Winter Coat, Flared Jacket, or Snowsuit Template

Reminder:
Initials & Home Teacher on Back of Paper

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Snow Angel for Assigned Table
2. Use Marbles & Jingle Bells for Snow Painting Station
3. Tint- lighting of a color by adding white. An angel shape is a simple upside down letter "U" with two extending lines from the bottom. Next add a curved curved line for the underside, wing, and tail. Can you lay down and spread your legs and arms apart to mimic making a snow angel? What else can you do with the arms and legs to make our "person" look more like a "Snow Angel"?

Lesson Activities

1. Outline & Trace TWO Snow Boots/Shoes & TWO Mittens/Gloves
2. Add Buttons, Ribbon, & Pattern (Stripped, Zig Zag, Dots) to Winter Accessories
3. Use Washable Markers to fill in Snow Boots/Shoes & Mittens/Gloves

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Snow Angel for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (water bucket, paintbrushes, scissors, glue sticks)

Lesson Activities

1. Use Blue & White Tempera Paint to make the shadow of a Snow Angel
2. Cut Out & Glue Down Winter Coat, Snowsuit, or Flared Jacket in center of paper
3. Cut Out & Glue Down Snow Boots/Shoes & Mittens/Gloves
