Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Fairy Godmother Turning the Pumpkin into the Carriage (1950) Mary Blair
2. Read "Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal: a worldwide Cinderella" by Paul Fleischman and Julie Paschkis
3. Discussion Questions "What was Cinderella's carriage made of? What does Cinderella's carriage turn int oat midnight? How did Cinderella get to the ball? Would you like to ride in a pumpkin carriage? What kind of animal was the coachman in Cinderella? What if Cinderella didn't have a pumpkin? What other vegetables could she use to get to the ball? What might you like about it? What words can you use to describe this piece? What does value do to the pumpkin? What other words could you use? How does the Cinderella story end? What is a fairytale?"
Lesson Activities
1. Use geometric shapes (oval, circle, rectangle) to draw an assorted vegetable (pumpkin, onion, squash) as the magical vehicle
2. Use geometric shapes (oval circle rectangle) to draw details (wheels, rims, windows) of the magical vehicle
3. Use scissors to cut out the assorted vegetable (pumpkin, onion, squash) and details (wheels, rims, windows) of the Magical Pumpkin Carriage

Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Magical Pumpkin Carriage for Assigned Table
2. Carriage in Its Transformed Form (1950) Mary Blair
3. Discussion Questions "How did the Cinderella story start? How is Cinderella like other fairytale characters? Why did the fairy godmother appear? What happened when Cinderella went to the ball? Do you think this was a good book to read? What would have happened if Cinderella didn't drop her slipper? What will happen now that Cinderella and the prince are married?"
Lesson Activities
1. Use types of line (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) to add details (windows, door, wheels) to pumpkin carriage
2. Use oil pastels to fill in the positive space of the exterior of the magical pumpkin carriages
3. Use oil pastel to fill in the negative space of the exterior of the magical pumpkin carriages
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Magical Pumpkin Collage for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (scissors, glue sticks, construction paper, pastel)
Lesson Activities
1. Add pumpkin parts (brown stems, green leaves, orange shell) with oil pastels to pumpkin carriage
2. Use texture techniques (sponge, stencil, distress) to add details (trimming, lights, rim) to pumpkin carriages
3. Add highlights/shadows with colored pencil to exterior of the Magical Pumpkin Carriages
