Wayne Theibaud Gum ball Machine Prints

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Wayne Theibaud Gumball Machine Print using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use primary/secondary colors (blue, yellow, red; green, purple, orange), space (positive, negative), and value (tints, shades) inspired by American Painter (1920-Present) Wayne Thiebaud
  • Understand art history (art appreciation, mimicking art styles) and design principles (rhythm, movement, repetition) based on Pop Art
  • Define Repetition (one object or shape repeated)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Three Machines (1963) Wayne Thiebaud
2. Gumball Machine (1970) Wayne Theibaud
3. Discussion Questions "What does it mean to repeat? How do we see repetition in this artwork? Where else do we see repetition in his artwork? What does this piece of art make you think of? Where would you see one of these gumball machines in life? How does the gum taste? Does each color taste different? Do you see where the light hits the gumboils inside the glass? How did Wayne Thiebaud create light?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose One 12" by 15" Drawing Paper
2. Draw a large circle in the center of the paper for the glass top of the gum ball machine print
3. Draw two curved lines for the top of the glass top and draw two diagonal lines for the bottom of the gum ball machine print

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Wayne Theibaud Gumball Machine Print for Assigned Table
2. Jawbreaker Machine (1963) Wayne Thiebaud

3. Discussion Questions "What is the style of art that shows images from popular culture? What does "pop" in pop art stand for? What is the name of the artist who was inspired by sweet treats and desserts in his paintings? Who loves sweet treats and desserts? Is there repetition in this painting? What shapes do you see? What do you think the gumball machines would feel like if you could touch them? How does this make you feel- hungry, thirsty, or happy? How are these gumball machines different from the real gumball machines? How are they the same? If you got one gumball from the machine, which color would you think would come out?"

Lesson Activities

1. Connect the two diagonal lines with a straight line and add a rectangle at the bottom of the gum ball machine print
2. Add a small circle, two small triangles, and a square for the coin slot of the gumball machine print
3.  Add a rectangle for the gum ball hole and add four diagonal lines for the gumball machine print

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Wayne Thiebaud Gumball Machine Prints for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (scissors, circle sponges, gluesticks)

Lesson Activities

1. Use circle sponges to add twenty different colored gum balls to the gum ball machine print
2. Use aluminum foil to fill in the coin slot and hole with metallic (silver) color for the gum ball machine print
3. Fill in the positive space (gum ball machine) and negative space (background) with primary colors (red, yellow, blue) of the gum ball machine print
