Hot Air Balloon Collages

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Hot Air Balloon Collage using collage techniques learned in class
  • Use warm/cool colors (red, orange, yellow; blue, green, purple), form (two dimensional three dimensional), and line types (contour, diagonal, horizontal) inspired by Hot Air Balloon Inventors Jacques Etienne Montgoifier, Joseph-Michel Montgoifier, and Ed Yost
  • Understand scientific connections (density, history of flight, engineering) and design principles (rhythm, movement, balance) based on 19th Century Art
  • Define Perspective (illusion of space and depth on a flat surface)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Hot Air Balloon Inventors Jacques Etienne Montgoifier & Joseph-Michel Montgoifier
2. Read Hot Air The (Mostly) True Story of the First Hot Air Balloon Ride by Marjorie Priceman

3. Discussion Questions "Can you find the hot air balloon in this painting? Will you use an idea from a favorite game or story? Will it look like a vehicle or machine? What can you invent that is new and different? Where would you like to go in a hot air balloon? What do you notice about this work of art? What kinds of lines do you see? What descriptive words can you use to describe the lines? What shapes do you see? What colors do you see? what does the chandelier remind you of?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to cut out three different sized hot air balloons for landscape collages
2. Add scenery (mountain side, river, lake) to background (sky, ground) of Hot Air Balloon Collages
3. Outline three different sized hot air balloons with cool colors (blue, green, purple) of Hot Air Balloon Collages

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Hot Air Balloon Collage for Assigned Table
2. Read A Book of Concepts: A Rainbow Balloon by Ann Lenssen
3. Discussion Questions "What were the first animals to go up in a hot air balloon? Who was aboard the first manned untethered hot-air balloon flight? What balloon part holds the air and is known as what? What gas is used to heat the air that fills up the balloon? What ballooning feat did Steve Fossett achieve in June/July 2002? What is the name of the vertical speedometer? What keeps hot air balloons in the air? How long will the balloon stay in the air? Who invented the hot air balloon? What materials were used in the first hot air balloon?"

Lesson Activities

1. Outline scenery (mountain side, river, lake) behind three different sized hot air balloons of landscape collages
2. Use cool colors (green, blue purple) to fill in negative space (background) of Hot Air Balloon Collages
3. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to fill in positive space (hot air balloons) of Hot Air Balloon Collages

Day Three, Art Start

1.  Retrieve Hot Air Balloon Collage for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (glue sticks, scrapbook paper, markers)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) to positive space (hot air balloons) of Hot Air Balloon Collages
2. Add shadows (cast shadow, shadow) to negative space (background) of Hot Air Balloon Collages
3. Add upcycled materials (old calendars, paper baskets, yarn, towel) to positive space (hot air balloon) of Hot Air Balloon Collages
