ASYMMETRICAL KITE DESIGNS

ASYMMETRICAL KITE DESIGNS

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Asymmetrical Kite Design using collage techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic), warm/cool colors (red, orange, yellow; green, blue, purple), and line types (diagonal, vertical, horizontal) inspired by Chinese Artist (1919-Present) Han Yiqi
  • Use scientific connections (density, history of flight, engineering) and design principles (rhythm, movement, balance) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Frame (rigid structure of the kite to which the sail or cover is fastened)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Red Parrot (1985) Ha Yiqi
2.  Read The Legend of the Kite: A Story of China by Chen Jiang Hong
3. Discussion Questions "Have you ever flown a kite? Have you ever built a kite? Where have you flown kites? Where does the power come from to lift the kite? Why do kite flyers not use rope to hold kites? What color would not be a good choice for a kite? Do you think you could fly a kite on a day with no wind? How would you do this? Can you think of a way to estimate how high a kite is flying? What is a practical use for a kite? What types of kites have you seen from various cultures? How does your kite reflect that culture? Do you love when spring winds start to blow?"

Lesson Activities

.1. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to cut out three different sized kites for the landscape collages
2. Add scenery (mountain side, rivers, lake) to the background (sky, ground) of the Asymmetrical Kite Designs
3. Outline three different sized kites with cool colors (blue, green, purple) of the Asymmetrical Kite Designs

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Asymmetrical Kite Design for Assigned Table
2. Ten Thousand Fortunes on Floating Clouds (1988) Ha Yiqi
3. Discussion Questions "If you needed to make a kite out of metal, what kinds of changes would you have to make to try to get it to fly? Can you think of any additional practical uses for a kite? What could you use a kite to do? Why do some kite flyers run at the start but then stop running? Why do kite runners not have to keep running to keep the kites up? Why do kites not fly well when near buildings? How could you calculate the height of a kite? What influences do Maori have in New Zealand today?"

Lesson Activities

1. Outline scenery (mountain side, river, lake) behind three different sized kites of landscape collages
2. Use cool colors (green, blue, purple) to fill in negative space (background) of Asymmetrical Kite Designs
3. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to fill in positive space (kites) of Asymmetrical Kite Designs

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Asymmetrical Kite Design for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (straw, glue sticks, tissue paper)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) to positive space (kites) of Asymmetrical Kite Designs
2. Add shadows (cast shadow, shadow) to negative space (background) of Asymmetrical Kite Designs
3. Add upcycled materials (old calendars, paper baskets, yarn, towel) to positive space (kites) of Asymmetrical Kite Designs
