MIXED MEDIA GEMSTONES

 Mixed Media Gemstones

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Mixed Media Gemstone using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use Metallic Colors (gold silver bronze), space variation (geometric organic free form), and space (positive negative) inspired by English Artist (1978-Present) Rebecca Chaperon
  • Use mathematical techniques (straight lines, arched edges, simple shapes) and design principles (composition balance repetition) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Gemstone (mineral crystal cut, polished, and formed to make jewelry)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Crystal Form #1 (2020) Rebecca Chaperon

2. Read A Rock Is Lively by Dianna Hutts Aston And Sylvia Long

3. Discussion Questions "What is the name of your birthstone or gemstone? What colors do gemstones come in? How many gems can you identify on your own? What is the difference between mineral, organic, and created gemstones? For a rock to be considered a gemstone, it must have what? Which month has a birthstone that is considered a kaleidoscope? What is the hardness of a gemstone? Are synthetic gemstones considered a mineral? Out of al the gemstones in the world, none of them have the occurrence of gold in them? Is color a reliable characteristic that can be used to identify a gemstone? Which is no a hue of color? what is the most valuable gem in Asia? Jade is the most precious gemstone in which country? What birthstone can change from one color to another under different lighting? Which one is not a gemstone?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose a 12" X 15" Drawing Paper

2. Draw three line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) for basic shapes (geometric organic free form) of gemstone drawings

3. Outline the three line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) with metallic colors (copper silver gold) of gemstone drawings

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Media Gemstones for Assigned Table

2. Mineral Movement (2020) Rebecca Chaperon

3. Discussion Questions "Can you tell me two facts about gems and rocks? Did the artist draw a polygonal gem using guide dots and straight lines? Did the artist limit their color palette to either warm or cool colors? How could this composition be improved? what stone is said to protect against nightmares? Which birthstone stands for devotion? What is the best gemstone to buy a man? What is the best gemstone to buy a woman? What color of pearl stands for money? What is the most valued color of moonstone? If a step-cut has its corners cut off, what is it called? A fire oral is what color? How many star points does a star sapphire have? What birthstone can change from one color to another under different lighting?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use mathematical techniques (straight lines, arched edges, curved lines) to add basic shapes (geometric organic free form) to positive space (foreground) of gemstone drawings

2. Use drawing techniques (straight lines, arched edges, curved lines) to add basic shapes (geometric organic free form) to negative space (background) of gemstone drawings

3. Use drawing techniques (straight lines, arched edges, curved liens) to add details (pattern, repetition) to the Mixed Media Gemstones

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Media Gemstones for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (tempera paint, paintbrushes, water bucket)

Lesson Activities

1. Use analogous colors (blue, purple, red) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the gemstone drawings

2. Use analogous colors (yellow orange green) to fill in the negative space (background) of the gemstone drawings

3. Add design details (sparkles, glitter, border) to the positive space (foreground) of the Mixed Media Gemstones
