DELAUNAY INSPIRED EIFFEL TOWERS

 Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Towers

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Tower using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), shape variation (geometric organic free form) and value (lightness darkness) inspired by French Artist (1885-1941) Robert Delaunay
  • Use drawing techniques (horizon line vanishing point parallel lines) and design principles (composition balance proportion) based on Modern Art
  • Define Contrast (arrangement of opposite elements in a piece to create visual interest, excitement, and drama)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. The Red Tower (1911) Robert Delaunay

2. Read The New Art Of Color (The Documents of 20th Century Art) by Robert Delaunay

3. Discussion Questions "Where did Modern Art begin? Is Modern Artmore representative then expressive? What is nonobjective Orphism? What shape are mostly used in nonobjective oprhism? What is Robert Delaunay the founder of? What is naturalistic art? What is abstract art? who is credited with the founding of Orphism? Which orphist painter went n to incorporate fabric and fashion into their art? How many liens are there approximately in each piece? How many circles are in each piece? Where are the circles placed? will colors connect across a line to complete t he riches? How does he incorporate achromatic colors? Do any colors lie next to each other? Is a color on one side of a shape painted directly on the other side of any line?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use three different geometric shapes (circle oval eclipse) to represent creativity (use of imagination to product an original idea) within ones tower drawing

2. Look at photographs of cultural icons (Eiffel Tower, statue of liberty, was Xieng khuan) as inspiration for tower drawings

3. Use design principles (composition rhythm movement) to draw a basic outline of tower for Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Towers

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Towers for Assigned Tables

2. Eiffel Tower Print (1926) Robert Delaunay 

3. Discussion Questions "What is going on in his artwork? What was your first reaction to this artwork? Does your opinion change the longer you look at this artwork? What types of lines are in this artwork? What types of colors are in the artwork? Which area of the artwork is emphasized by the artist? What choices did the Artis make to make that happen? How would you describe this artwork to someone who has never seen it? What elements of this painting seem real? What adjectives would you use to describe this artwork? What elements seem dreamlike or imaginary? What do we know about the artist after viewing this artwork? How do you think this artwork was made? What do you think the artist is trying to say in this artwork? What emotions do you feel when looking at this? What emotions do you notice in this artwork? How do you think the artist was feeling when he created this artwork?" 

Lesson Activities

1. Add line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to help add visual interest within ones tower drawings

2. Look at photographs of cultural icons (Eiffel Tower, statue of liberty, was Xieng khuan) as inspiration when use analogous colors (red orange yellow) for positive space (tower) of tower drawings

3. Use colored chalk (blue purple green) to fill in the negative space (background) of Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Towers

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Towers for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (colored pencils, sharpeners, chalk)

Lesson Activities

1. Finish adding three different line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to help add visual interest within ones tower drawings

2. Look at photographs of cultural icons (Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Was Xieng Khuan) as inspiration for negative space (background) of tower drawings

3. Use different colored pencil techniques (cross hatching, scraping, burnishing) to add design principles (composition gradation proportion) to negative space (background) of Delaunay Inspired Eiffel Towers
