NORTHERN LIGHTS LANDSCAPES

 Northern Lights Landscapes

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Northern Lights Landscapes using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use complementary colors (red, green; blue, orange; yellow, purple), shape variation (geometric, organic), and space (positive, negative) inspired by Canadian Artist (1986-Present) Barbel Smith
  • Use drawing techniques (blending, smearing, smudging) and design principles (movement, repetition, proportion) based on Canadian Art
  • Define Blend (a technique of creating a gradual transition of different colors or values)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Northern Sky (2018) Barbel Smith

2. A Search For The Northern Lights by Elizabeth Rush and Izzi Rush

3. Discussion Questions "What colors form within these paintings? How did the artist make the sky look different from the waves since they are both blue? What colors do you see in the water? What is the weather like? How did the artist show movement in the water? Does the sea look dangerous? How is a seascape different from a landscape? Can you find these places on the map? Have you ever thought about sailing on the sea? Do you think fishermen sailing on the sea encountered any dangers? How does the artist show perspective? What do her northern lights remind you of?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use a ruler, compass, or straightedge to draw the scenery of the landscape drawings

2. Add objects (animals, grasses, wildlife, rocks, mountains) within the positive space (foreground) of the landscape drawings

3. Use black sharpie marker to outline the foreground (animals, grasses, wildlife, rocks), middle ground (mountains, valleys), and background (sky, clouds) of their Northern Lights Landscapes

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Northern Lights Landscapes for Assigned Tables

2. Unfurling (2018) Barbel Smith

3. Discussion Questions "What makes the Northern Lights so special? How are the Northern Lights formed? Where are the Northern Lights located? What is the weather like in the North? How is each region impacted by their specific weather and climate? How dod the physical features define the regions of a country? What characteristics make each of them unique? For thousands of year, the area has been continuously inhabited by whom?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add texture (implied, visual, actual) in the middle ground (mountain range) of the landscape drawings

2. Use warm colors (red orange yellow) to fill in the foreground (mountain range, wildlife, greenery) of the landscape drawings

3. Use cool colors (green, blue, purple) to fill in the negative space (sky, clouds) of the Northern Lights Landscapes

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Northern Lights Landscapes for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (erasers, felt tip pens, colored pencils)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) within the scenery of the landscape drawings

2. Add shadows (cast shadows, shadows) within the scenery of the landscape drawings

3. Add details (animals, mountains, rivers, deserts) within the scenery of the Northern Lights Landscapes
