SNOWFLAKE HATS

 Snowflake Hats

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Snowflake Hats using drawing techniques learned in class 
  • Use shape variation (geometric organic), space (positive negative), and texture (smooth rough) inspired by Budapest Illustrator (1979-Present) Balazs Solti
  • Use collage techniques (overlapping, cropping, layering) and design principles (composition repetition balanced) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Fashion (use different clothing and accessories to express views, ideas, and personality)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Winter Lion (2015) Balazs Solti

2. Read The Hat by Jan Brett

3. Discussion Questions "What are the best hats for winter? What are some popular types of hats worn in winter? What are the winter hats that cover the ears called? What is the purpose of a winter hat? Should you wear a winter hat? What is the warmest winter hat? Can you predict what will happen on the following pages? How did the hedgehog get a hold of the stocking? What did he decide to do with it? What do each of the animals say to the hedgehog? How do you think the hedgehog is feeling in this story? What do the other animals do at the end of the story? How do you think the hedgehog is feeling at the end of the story?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Colored Construction Paper

2. Use hat template (fedora, fur, fleece) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the hat designs

3. Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal) to draw the patterns (stripes, dots, waves) onto the positive space (hat) of the Snowflake Hats

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Snowflake Hats for Assigned Table

2. Hello Winter (2019) Balazs Solti

3. Discussion Questions "Are hats the same on both sides? What types of lines did you use to mark a pattern or design on the hats? How do you like your colorful hats? What eye-catching embellishments did you add to your hats? Is it merely decorative orders it pull your eye to something important? What are hats? How many of you have ever worn a hat? How many have you have ever lost a hat? How did you feel when you lost the hat? Why are hats easy to lose? Why do you think this story is called "The Hat"?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) to the positive space (foreground) of the hat designs

2. Add shadows (reflective shadow, cast shadow) to the negative space (background) of the hat designs

3. Add embellishments (pom poms, cotton balls, jewels) to the positive space (foreground) of the Snowflake Hats

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Snowflake Hats for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (glue sticks, scissors, paper)

Lesson Activities

1. Use line type (horizontal vertical diagonal) to add patterns (dots, waves, stripes) to snowflakes of the hat designs

2. Use warm colors (red orange yellow) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the hat designs 

3. Use cool colors (blue green purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the Snowflake Hats
