LASCAUX CAVE BULLS

 Lascaux Cave Bulls

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Lascaux Cave Bulls using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), shape variation (geometric, organic), and space (positive, negative) inspired by Prehistoric Cave Paintings
  • Use drawing methods (charcoal, powder, pigment) and design principles (composition variation movement) based on Paleolithic Art
  • Define Petroglyph (an image that is carved, chipped, or painted onto a stone)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Lascaux Cave, France

2. Read The Secret Cave: Discovering Lascaux by Emily Arnold McCully

3. Discussion Questions "Who were the first artists? Why would people draw thousands of years ago? What colors do you think the cave artists used? Can you think of how they may have created these different colors? What do you think the surface of a cave wall feels like? How did the caveman sigh their artwork? What is prehistoric art? How is the work of a reflection of the ancient culture that created this work? Did all languages start as pictographs? Did the cave paintings come before a writing system?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12 X 15 Painting Paper

2. Use basic shapes (circle, oval, triangle) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the cave bull paintings

3. Add bull parts (horns, spots, hair) to the negative space (foreground) of the Lascaux Cave Bulls

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Lascaux Cave Bulls for Assigned Table

2. Laas Geel Caves, Somalia

3. Discussion Questions "Where did art originate? What is Paleolithic Art? What was the purpose of cave paintings? How does prehistoric art illustrate the living conditions of society at that time? When were pictographs invented? Why was drawing so important in early history? What is this picture called and where is it located? The Cave of Lascaux dates to what historic period? Who made the Chauvet cave paintings? What does pictograph mean? What subject matter did the prehistoric people draw? What were the first artworks from prehistoric times? Which is an element of art? Which is a principle of design?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add patterns (stripes dots lines) to the positive space (animal) of the cave bull paintings

2. Use neutral colors (black white grey) to fill in the negative space (background) of the cave bull paintings

3. Use neutral colors (black white grey) to fill in the positive space (animals) of the Lascaux Cave Bulls

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Lascaux Cave Bulls for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (charcoal, powder, pigment)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) to the positive space (animal) of the cave bull paintings 

2 Add shadows (cast shadow, shadow) to the negative space (background) of the cave bull paintings

3. Add repeating patterns (dots, stripes, spots) to the negative space (background) of the Lascaux Cave Bulls
