CLAY KINDERGARTEN LIONS

 Clay Kindergarten Lions

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Clay Kindergarten Lions using clay techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic, free form), form (two dimensional, three dimensional), and texture (actual, implied, visual) inspired by French Painter (1844-1910) Henri Rousseau
  • Use sculpture techniques (modeling, relief, carving, casting) and design principles (repetition, pattern, proportion) based on Post Impressionism
  • Define Relief (sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. The Sleeping Gypsy (1897) Henri Rousseau

2. Read How To Be A Lion by Ed Vere

3. Discussion Questions "What characteristics (brave, bold, strong, integrity) fit when you think go a lion? Did you know that lions live in grasslands, scrubs, and open woodlands of Africa? What types of lines (curved, caste, loops) will you use as inspiration for your lion? Can a lion be anything other than fierce? Do people need to conform to preordained ideas? Should lions have to change if they want to help others? What is something different about you that should be celebrated? How is empathy good for oneself, community, and society? How do we find the courage to be ourselves? How does this book challenge the traditional ideas of strength? What makes you unique?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) for the proportions (head, neck, shoulder) within the silhouette of the clay lions

2. Mold clay into basic shapes (oval face, present ears, rectangle neck) for the positive space (animal) of the clay lions

3. Use needle tools to draw facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) for the positive space (animal) of the Clay Kindergarten Lions

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Clay Kindergarten Lions for Assigned Tables

2. Jungle With Lion (1910) Henri Rousseau

3. Discussion Questions "What is your expressive lion portrait favorite environment? Can animals be happy, sad, lonely, mad, or loving? How do the illustrations reflect the animal's human like qualities? What kinds of bond can develop between a human and an animal (friend, caregiver, support)? Does the fur usually grow in one particular direction? Do cats love to sit in the sun? What is the name of this animal? Why did you choose this animal? What do you find inspiring about this animal? What did you as an artist hope to convey about this animal through your artwork?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) within the positive space (animal) and silhouette of the clay lions

2. Add details (eye sockets, brown bone, moles) to the facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) of the clay lions

3. Use modeling tools (paddle, brush, grips) to smooth out the facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) of the Clay Kindergarten Lions

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Clay Kindergarten Lions for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (modeling tools, rubber mats, clay, glaze)

Lesson Activities

1. Add warm colors (red orange yellow) to the positive space (foreground) of the Clay Kindergarten Lions

2. Add warm colors (red orange yellow) to the negative space (background) of the Clay Kindergarten Lions

3. Apply Gloss Finish to the proportions (face proportions, facial features, accessories) of the Clay Kindergarten Lions
