TAPE ART MURAL

 Tape Art Mural


Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Tape Art Mural using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic, free form), space (positive, negative), and texture (actual, implied, visual) inspired by Ukrainian Visual Artist (1958-Present) Mark Khaisman
  • Use mural techniques (fresco, mosaic, encaustic, stained glass, photography) and design principles (emphasis, movement, proportion) based on Street Art
  • Define Temporary Art (artwork designed to be accessible for only a short period of time)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

2. Read Collaborative Tape Art, The Piktotape Method by Michael Townsend

3. Discussion Questions "What tape works best? How much time does something like this take? What master artists could students look to for inspiration? Why use collaborative projects? Who are the leaders? Who has good communication skills? What personalities work well together or do not work tell togetheR? How is drawing n the walls different from drawing on paper? How are the two similar? How di the temporality of the drawing affect its making? How did the temporality of the drawing affect the concept? What are the benefits of temporality? What are the detriments to temporality? Is your tape drawing one in public or is it also for the public? What is the difference? How do we decide what to draw as a group? How do we make our drawings come together? How big can the drawings be? How can we draw specific items? Is this art? How can tape make the most out of students' imagination and eagerness to create? How about a design challenge using tape?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose One 3" X 3" Multicolored Tape 

2. Use a protractor, straight edge, and compass to draw lines to help divide the sections of each multicolored tape location  

3. Write name on two individual multicolored tapes before adding to the Tape Art Mural

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Tape Art Mural for Assigned Tables

3. Discussion Questions "How has street art been created throughout art history? What does street art represent for some artists? Why is street art and public art important? What is the difference between street art and fine art? What images or scenes are shown in this tape art? hat are the three common tape patterns? What stuck with you today? How can you make a difference? How can you use tape to change the climate in your school? Why not try a master painting together? How can we be engaged in this every class? What was your reaction to this artwork? If artwork could talk, what would it say? What is missing from this artwork? What emotions do you feel when looking at this artwork? How do you think this artwork was used by the person who made it? What does this artwork say about the world we live in?"

Lesson Activities

1. Fill in the positive space (objects) with color combinations (monochromatic, earth tones, neutral) of the Tape Art Mural 

2. Fill in the negative space (background) with color combinations (monochromatic, earth tones, neutral) of the Tape Art Mural 

3. Write personal signature on two individual multicolored tape before adding to the final Tape Art Mural

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Tape Art Mural for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (scissors, tape, masking tape, duck tape)

Lesson Activities

1. Outline personal signature three times before adding two individual multicolored tape to Tape Art Mural

2. Use highlights (reflective light, light source) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the Tape Art Mural

3. Use shadows (cast shadow, reflective shadow) to fill in the negative space (background) of the Tape Art Mural
