FAMILY HEIRLOOM CUCKOO CLOCK

Family Heirloom Cuckoo Clock

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a Family Heirloom Cuckoo Clock using techniques learned in class
  • Use shape (free form, organic, geometric), line (vertical, horizontal, diagonal), and texture (gold, wood, metal)
  • Use mathematical connections (paradigms, pendulums, roman numerals) and design principles (variation, movement, rhythm) relating to 18th Century Southwestern German Phillip Hainhofer
  • Define Decorative (to make something look more attractive)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. The Black Forest (1979-Present) Stefan Strumbel 
2. Read The Cuckoo Clock by Mary Stolz
3. Discussion Questions "What is the different about the clocks? What is similar? How are each made? How are decorative symbols chosen to adorn the clocks? How are clocks used in each country- only for time keeping or decorative use? How do you define home?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" by 12" Brown Construction Paper
2. Cut Out Geometric Shapes (triangle, rectangle, square) for clock base, cuckoo, and roof top 
3. Use a Glue Stick to attach the clock base, cuckoo, and roof top together

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Family Heirloom Cuckoo Clock for Assigned Table
2. Read Rare & Unusual Black Forest Clocks by J.Miller
3. Reflection Questions "Decorative- to make something look more attractive. What is your self-perception? What reflects who you are to the outside? How and by what do you define yourself?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 10" by 10" White Construction Paper
2. Draw a circle and 1 to 12 roman numerals for the Clock Face
3. Cut Out & Glue Down two clock hands in the middle of the Clock Face

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Family Heirloom Cuckoo Clock for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (glue sticks, construction paper, scissors)

Lesson Activities

1. Make a square opening at top for the Colored Cuckoo 
2. Use colored pencils to decorate (clover, mushrooms, ladybugs, acorns) the clock face and roof top
3. Add final details using collage techniques (layering, combining) to Family Heirloom Cuckoo Clock
