Van Gogh Inspired Citrus Fruit Still Life

Learning Targets

I can..
  • Create a Van Gogh Inspired Citrus Fruit Still Life using blending techniques learned in class
  • Use earth colors (yellow gold white orange), shapes (geometric organic) and texture (invented abstract) inspired by Dutch Painter (1853-1890) Vincent Van Gogh
  • Use mark making techniques (loop, scribble, broken line) and design principles (placement, proportion, composition) based on Post Impressionism
  • Define Expressive (conveying a thought or feeling in an image)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Still Life With Straw Hat (1885) Vincent Van Gogh
2. Read The Artist And Me by Shane Peacock
3. Discussion Questions "What did we learn throughout this project? Did Vincent Van Gogh use paint? What kind of paint? What was the world like during his time? What was Vincent's childhood like? What type of failures did Vincent experience during his life? How do you think this affected him? What was Vincent's relationship with his brother? How does color in The Potato Eaters convey the emotion of the subject? How did the paintings of artists like Monet and Gaugin influence and transform Vincent's artistic style?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" by 15" Drawing Paper
2. Add three dimensional shapes (cylinder, pyramid, sphere) to composition of arranged objects (fruits dishes fabric)
3. Add horizon line in line background (table, fabric, wallpaper) to separate the subject matter from the wallpaper

What meaning, theme, or message did you want to convey? Were you successful? Are you happy with your final piece? Are any elements or qualities you like in particular? Does your final work the way you thought it would initially? How effective is it? Is there anything you would change?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use earth colors (yellow brown white) to fill in positive space (fruit, dish) of the still life
2. Use earth colors (yellow brown white) to fill negative space (wallpaper) of the still life
