  • Create an original Peter Max Inspired Statue of Liberty using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use analogous colors (yellow green blue), line variation (thick thin), and space (positive, negative) inspired by American German Artist (1937-Present) Peter Max 
  • Use commemorate ideals (freedom, democracy, opportunity) and design principles (composition, contrast, balance) based on Pop Art 
  • Define Symbol (recognizable picture standing for an idea or story)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Delta Statue of Liberty (1999) Peter Max
2. Read Emma's Poem: The Voice of the Statue of Liberty by Linda Glaser
3. Discussion Questions "Did you know that the Statue of Liberty is only as thick as two pennies placed face to face? Why is the Statue of Liberty green? How tall is the Statue of Liberty? Who did the Statue of Liberty welcome to the United States? What does the Statue of Liberty stand for? Who gave the Statue of Liberty to us? Where is the Statue of Liberty located? Did you know the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in October? Who was the inspiration for the Statue of Liberty? What does the seven rays on her crown represent? What does the Roman numerals on the tablets on her left hand stand for? What does the broken shackle and chains symbolize in America?"

Lesson Activities 

1. Choose 12" by 15" Painting Paper
2. Draw Three Thumbnail Sketches of the Statue of Liberty using perspective drawing skills (overlapping, cropping, enlarging) for Statue of Liberty
3. Add details (cityscape, fireworks, night sky) to negative space of the Peter Max Inspired Statue of Liberty

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Peter Max Inspired Statue of Liberty for Assigned Table

Who wrote the poem which is engraved on the base of the statue? The Statue's sculptor Ferederic-August Baroldi, is said to have based the Statue's face on which of his female relations? What is the Statue's full official title?"

1. Use commemorate ideals (freedom, democracy, opportunity) to add details (patterns, emblems) to the composition of the Statue of Liberty
2. Use contrast (highlights, shadows) and balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical) to fill in the positive space of the Statue of Liberty 
3. Use drawing techniques (blending, shading, rubbing) to fill in the negative space of the Peter Max Inspired Statue of Liberty 

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Peter Max Inspired Statue of Liberty for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (painting paper, water bucket, paint brush)
