MIXED UP ANIMALS

Mixed Up Animals

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create an original Mixed Up Animals using computer techniques learned in class
  • Use geometric shapes (oval, triangle, circle, rectangle), line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), and value (lightness, darkness) inspired by Dutch Designer (1982-Present) Redmer Hoekstra
  • Use computer techniques (image reference, photomontage, embellishments) and design principles (proportion, gradation, movement) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Morph (changing from one image another using small gradual steps)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Book Owl (2014) Redmer Hoekstra
2. Read The Whingdingdilly by Bill Peet
3. Discussion Questions "Where do your animal live? What three animals did you combine? What is your animal called (be sure to combine all three name)? What does your animal eat? Where does your animal live? What are three characteristics you would use to describe how your animal looks? What is the name of the first animal used? What is the name of the second animal used? What is the name of the third animal used? How about some hoof stripes for unity, gills for the face, or a zebra tail? What biome does your animal live? What kinds of plants would be in your biome? How did you combine different animal parts to create a mixed breed animal? Did you show values by having pressure of the pencil by showing highlights and shadows with complimentary colors? Did you create a center of interest at the eyes by adding a white reflection?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use a pencil to draw shape variation (geometric, organic) of animal parts (fins, wings, legs) of mixed up animals
2. Use line types (wavy, straight, narrow) to add facial features (horns, tusks, hair) of mixed up animals 
3. Use line types (wavy, straight, narrow) to add details (stripes, wavy, zig zags) of mixed up animals 

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Up Animals for Assigned Table

3. Discussion Questions "What medium does the artist use in this work? Can you see any marks and why? What colors has the artist used and why? Are these primary, secondary, harmonious or complimentary? Why do you think the artist choose the colors in this picture? How does this picture make you feel? What would you think the artist is trying to make you feel? Why is this artist interesting to study? What have you learned about the artist? What do you now think of this artist? What are three similar characteristics in each picture? What do you notice about the background? What do you think the artist has created in this style?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use neutral colors (black, white, grey) to fill in the positive space (animal) of their mixed up animals
2. Use neutral colors (black, white, grey) to fill in negative space (background) of their mixed up animals
3. Use line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) to fill in positive space (animal) with designs for mixed up animals

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Up Animals for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (embellishments, computer, glue sticks)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (light source, reflective light) to positive space (animal) of their mixed up animals
2. Add shadows (cast shadow, shadow) to negative space (background) of their mixed up animals
3. Use stop motion program (iMotion, FlipaClip, Stop Motion) to add an animation to ones Mixed Up Animals
