RAINBOW BATIK BANDANAS

Rainbow Batik Bandanas

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a Batik Bandana using techniques learned in class
  • Use shape (free form, organic, geometric), earth colors (black, indigo, brown, yellow), and space (positive, negative) relating to 6th Century Indonesian Art Movements
  • Use decorative motifs (elephants, dragons, phoenix, peacock) and design principles (repetition, contrast, unity) inspired by Applied Art
  • Define Batik (a produced colored design on fabric using applied wax and dyes)

Lesson Activities
Day One, Art Start

1. 6th Century Indonesian Folk Art- Decorative Motifs


2. Grandpa Bear's Fantastic Scarf by Gillian Heal
3. Reflective Discussion "Many Indonesian Batik Patterns are symbolic. Infants are carried in slings decorated with symbols designed to bring luck. Certain designs show a person's royal rank determined by a pattern he or she wore. Some batik garments are tidings of good things and others are thrown into volcanos during celebrations."

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 20" by 20" White Bandana
2. Use a Pencil to draw Decorative Motifs (lotus, peacock, elephant, horse, butterflies)
3. Use a Sharpie or White Glue to outline or trace over Decorative Motifs

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Rainbow Batik Bandana for Assigned Table
2. Read Layla's Head Scarf by Mirlam Cohen
3. Batik- a produced colored design on fabric using applied wax and dyes. Which country is famous for their batik artwork and design? Who were known to wear these intricate designs and patterns?  What did these geometric and free form motifs mean?

Lesson Activities

1. Use Glue to outline or trace over Decorative Motifs (lotus, butterflies, elephant, horse, peacock)
2. Use Earth Colors (black, indigo, brown, yellow) to fill in the background 
3. Add Details to Batik Bandanas with Metallic Acrylic Paint

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Rainbow Batik Bandana for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (water buckets, paint brushes, acrylic paint)

Lesson Activities

1. Finish using Earth Colors (black, indigo, brown, yellow) to fill in the background
2. Add details to Batik Bandanas with Metallic Acrylic Paint
3. Rinse Rainbow Batik Bandanas THREE times to remove any additional acrylic paint, white glue, and earth color ink off
