Winter Russian Buildings
Learning Targets
I can...- Create a Winter Russian Building using techniques learned in class
- Use line variation (horizontal, vertical, diagonal), complex shapes (organic, geometric), and value (high, medium, low contrast)
- Use mathematical connections (geometric shapes, structures, variation) and design principles (emphasis, variation, proportion) relating to Russian Landmark Saint Basil Cathedral
- Define Embellishment (decorative detail or feature added to a building)
Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Saint Basil Cathedral (1561) by Ivan The Terrible2. Read Iggy Peck Architect by Andrea Beaty
Lesson Activities
1. Use observational drawing techniques (composition, direct light, value) to draw the basic parts (towers, base, pillars) of Buildings
2. Add Basic Shapes (triangle, circle, rectangle) to add windows, doorways, and balconies to Winter Buildings
3. Add Decorative Details (onion domes, tower, base columns) to Russian Buildings
Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Winter Russian Building for Assigned Table2. Read Max Moves to Moscow by Winifred Riser
3. Embellishment- decorative detail or feature added to a building. Tchiakovsky (1812) Overture inspired the construction of Saint Basil Cathedral.
Lesson Activities
1. Use pattern (stripes, spirals, meanders) to fill in the positive space of the buildings2. Add high contrast (shaded areas) and light/medium contrast (light areas) within any white space
3. Add intricate embellishments to the Decorative Details (onion dome, tower, base column)
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Winter Russian Building for Assigned Table2. Set Up Studio Area (Watercolor, Paintbrush, Water Bucket)
Lesson Activities
1. Use TWO Analogous Colors (Yellow, Green; Blue, Purple) to color the background2. Outline Pattern (stripes, spirals, meanders) with Permanent Black Marker
3. Cut Out & Glue Down Winter Russian House to Colored Background
