WARHOL POP CANS

Warhol Pop Cans

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create a Warhol Pop Can using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line quality (thick, thin), geometric shapes (circle, ellipse, cylinder), and harmonious colors (bright, complimentary) inspired by American Artist (1928-1987) Andy Warhol 
  • Use observational skills (value scale, proportion, illusion of depth) and design principles (contrast, repetition, harmony) based on Pop Art
  • Define Cultural Icon (a person, symbol, or place widely recognized or culturally significant to a large group of people)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Green Coca Cola Bottles (1962) Andy Warhol
2. Read Uncle Andy's by James Warhola
3. Discussion Questions "What brand of soup am I? What is your favorite brand or flavor of soup? What is your favorite brand or flavor of soup? How do different color palettes of the same image make you feel? How does the change in color affect the image itself? What feeling or message does Warhol want as a response from viewers? What statement is being made?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose One 12" by 15" Watercolor Paper
2. Use pencils to draw contour lines of soda parts (aluminum can, pop tab, lid)
2. Use pencils to erase any overlapping lines of soda parts (aluminum can, pop tab, lid)

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Warhol Pop Can for Assigned Table
2. Read "Who was Andy Warhol" by Kirsten Anderson
3. Cultural Icon- a person, symbol, object, or place widely recognized or culturally significant to a large group of people. Famous Artist Quote "Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art." Andy Warhol

Lesson Activities

1. Outline soda parts (aluminum can, pop tab, lid) with Black Sharpie Marker
2. Decorate soda can with brand name symbols, words, and iconic images
3. Use value to add highlights and shadows to the Warhol Pop Cans

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Warhol Pop Can for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (water buckets, watercolor, paint brushes)

Lesson Activities 

1. Use liquid watercolors to fill in positive space of brand name soda can
2. Use liquid watercolors to fill in negative space of brand name soda can
3. Add a recycled frame using recycled soda boxed for Warhol Pop Cans
