Lesson One
Day One, Art Start
1. Calabash Cat (2003) James Rumford2. Read "Calabash Cat and his amazing Journey" by James Rumbord
Lesson Activities
1. Choose 12" by 15" Drawing Paper2. Draw feline parts (claws, teeth, tail, whiskers, nose) in the middle of the white paper
3. Outline & Trace over feline parts (claws, tail, nose) with Black Sharpie Marker

Day Two, Art Start
1. Retrieve Calabash Cat for Assigned Table
2. Read The Kids Multicultural Art Book by Alexandra M. Terizan
3. Reflective Discussion "What do you see in this picture? What did James Rumford do to make his picture book look interesting? How do we know that James Rumford used his imagination in this picture? What are some differences between the imaginary world and the real world?"
Lesson Activities
1. Add patterns (dots, stripes, lines) on the inside of the feline drawing
2. Add symbols (vivid memories, storytelling, different cultures) to inside of feline drawing
3. Outline & Trace patterns (dots, stripes) and symbols (memories, stories) of their Calabash Cat
Day Three, Art Start
1. Retrieve Calabash Cat for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (watercolor, paint brushes, buckets)
Lesson Activities
1. Use watercolor to fill in the positive space of their colorful feline
2. Use watercolor to fill in the negative space of their colorful feline
3. Add highlights/shadows with colored pencil to their Calabash Cats
