Georgia O'Keeffe Inspired Grand Canyon

Learning Targets

I can...
  • Create an original Georgia O'Keefe Inspired Grand Canyon using landscape techniques learned in class
  • Use warm/cool colors (red, yellow; green, purple), texture types (implied, actual, visual), and space (positive, negative) inspired by American Artist (1887-1986) Georgia O'Keeffe
  • Use landscape techniques (overlapping, perspective, illusion of depth) and design principles (repetition, composition, graduation) based on American Modernism
  • Define Perspective (creating an illusion of a three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional flat surface)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start 

1. Storm Cloud (1923) Georgia O'Keeffe
2. Read a Children's Book "Grand Canyon" by Jason Chin
3. Discussion Questions "What makes the Grand Canyon so special? How was the Grand Canyon formed? Why is the Grand Canyon an important site for geologists? Which United States state is the Grand Canyon located in? How big the Grand Canyon? What can tourists and visitors do at the Grand Canyon? What is the weather like in the Grand Canyon? How is each region impacted by their specific weather and climate? How do the physical features define the regions of the United States? What characteristics make each of them unique?"

Lesson Activities 

1. Use a ruler, compass, or straightedge to draw the scenery of the landscape drawing
2. Add objects (animals, grasses, wildlife, rocks, cacti, mountain ranges) within the scenery of the landscape drawings
3. Use black sharpies to outline the foreground (rocks, mountain range), middle ground (grasses, animals, cacti), and background (sky, clouds) of their Grand Canyon Drawings

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Georgia O'Keeffe Inspired Grand Canyon for Assigned Table

3. Discussion Questions "What is the Grand Canyon? How wide is the Grand Canyon? What is the maximum depth of the Grand Canyon? President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited in on numerous occasions to do what? Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed at the Colorado River and its tributaries cut the channels through what? For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by whom? The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon a what? Who was the first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon?"  

Lesson Activities

1.  Add texture (implied, visual, actual) in the middle ground (mountain range) of the landscape drawing
2. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to fill in the foreground (mountain range, wildlife, greenery) of the landscape drawings
3. Use cool colors (green, blue, purple) to fill in the negative space (sky, clouds) of the Grand Canyon Drawings

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Georgia O'Keeffe Inspired Grand Canyon for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (erasers, felt tip pens, colored pencils)

1. Add highlights (sunlight, reflection) within the scenery of the landscape drawings
2. Add shadows (cast shadow, shadows) within the scenery of the landscape drawings
3. Add details (animals, mountains, rivers, deserts) within the scenery of the Grand Canyon drawings
