MIXED MEDIA TUGBOATS

 Mixed Media Tugboats

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Mixed Media Tugboat using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (wavy, curved, straight), texture (rough, smooth), and value (lightness, darkness) inspired by Australian Artist (2014-Present) Christina Morrison
  • Use types of brushstrokes (loose, choppy, smeared) and design principles (balance, movement, proportion) based on Contemporary Art
  • Define Movement (path the viewer's eye takes through the work of art)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Tiny Tug (2014) Christina Morrison

2. Read Timmy The West Coast Tug by Jeremy Moray

3. Discussion Questions "How do boats find their way in the fog? How many types of tugboats are there? What are tugboats? What happens when tugboats get tired? What makes tugboats special? How many tugboats are in the Star Fleet? Who is that tugboat? How many gusts can tugboats accommodate? Can people fish from tugboats? Do tugboats travel at night? What type of mood is conveyed in this tugboat painting? How did the artist add a feeling of movement in this painting? In which of these paintings are realistic texture most important?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Painting Paper

2. Use a pencil to draw a horizon line in the middle of the painting paper for the boat collages

3. Add scenery (ocean blue sky waves) to the negative space (background) of the Mixed Media Tugboats

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Media Tugboat for Assigned Table

2. Altas (2021) Christina Morrison

3. Discussion Questions "Can you tell me what this is picture of? How do you think this tugboat was made? What is a seascape? How do artists create depth in a work of art? What does the painting look back and look ahead? What color forms within these paintings? How did the artist make the sky look different from the wave since they are both blue? What colors do you see in the water? What is the weather like? How did the artist show movement in the wateR? How is a seascape different from a landscape? Can you find these places on a map?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add flowers (roses carnations tulips) to the middle ground (pond, lake, ocean) of the boat collages

2. Add tugboat to the positive space (foreground) and negative space (background) of the boat collages

3. Use black sharpie marker to outline foreground (boat) and positive space (foreground) of the Mixed Media Tugboats

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Mixed Media Tugboat for Assigned Table

2.  Set Up Studio Area (watercolor buckets colored pencils)

Lesson Activities

1. Use earth tones (brown yellow blue green) to fill in the positive space (tugboat) of the boat collages

2. Use earth tones (brown yellow blue green) to fill in the negative space (background) of the boat collages

3. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) and shadows (cast shadow, shadow) with colored pencil for Mixed Media Tugboat
