SERENE SEAGULLS

 Serene Seagulls

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Serene Seagulls using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), shape variation (geometric, organic), and value (lightness, darkness) inspired by American Artist (2013-Present) Paul Brent
  • Use perspective (foreground, middle ground, background) and design principles (copsotion, movement, gradation) based on American Art
  • Define Perspective (illusion of space and depth on a flat surface)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Arianna- Seagulls-White (2019) Paul Brent

2. Read Gulls... Gulls... Gulls... by Gail Gibbons

3. Discussion Questions "Do people like sea gulls? Are seagulls smart? What is the movement of a seagull called? What do you call a group of seagulls? Doe seagulls fly in a "v" formation like geese? why do seagulls gather high in the air and fly in circles? How fast do gulls fly? Why do seagulls often stand on one leg? What do sea gulls eat? Where do seagulls sleep? Why do you never see baby seagull? Can seagulls drink sea water? Why do sea gulls fly so close to the surface of the sea when offshore? Why do seagulls face the same direction when they are on ground? Do seagulls see in black and white or in color?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Drawing Paper

2. Draw three thumbnail sketches of the positive space (seagull) using line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) of the Serene Seagulls

3. Add details (water, boats, clouds) for the negative space (background) of the Serene Seagulls

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Serene Seagulls for Assigned Table

2. Arianna Seagulls- Wood (2019) Paul Brent

How did you learn about these American symbols? What is the population of seagulls in the United Staes? What makes seagulls so interesting to you? What do you find interesting about this painting?"

Lesson Activities

1. Use drawing techniques (blending, smudging, smearing) to fill in the facial features (beak, talons, irises) of the seagull paintings

2. Use design principles (composition, balance, gradation) to draw in the negative shape (background) of the seagull paintings

3. Use drawing techniques (blending, smudging, smearing) to fill in the negative space (background) of the Serene Seagulls

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Serene Seagulls for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (watercolor, paint brushes, water bucket)

Lesson Activities

1. Use neutral colors (black, brown, grey) to fill in the positive space (foreground) of the seagull paintings

2. Use neutral colors (black, brown, grey) to fill in the negative space (background) of the seagull paintings

3. Add design details (cropping, enlarging, overlapping) to the background of the Serene Seagulls
