CATS ON FENCE PAINTINGS

 Cats On A Fence Paintings 

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Cats On A Fence Paintings using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use rainbow order colors (red orange yellow green blue purple), line types (horizontal, vertical diagonal) and shape variation (geometric, organic, free form) inspired by American Illustrator (1969-Present) Rob Reger
  • Use painting techniques (overlapping, layering, cropping) and design principles (composition, movement, repetition) based on Illustration

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

3. Discussion Questions "What is your favorite theme about these artworks? How does this make you feel? What do you think of this selection of cat themed artwork from the Smithsonian? What is the value of black cats in Egyptian culture? Why are black cats unable to shed their bad reputation in the United States? What shapes did you use to make your cats? What might these cats be doing in the picture? What did you think about when putting the shapes together? What might a black cat that is sitting look like? How about a black cat that is laying down for a nap? What might a black cat playing with a toy look like? What would a happy cat look like? What would a sad cat look like? What would an angry cat look like?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Painting Paper 

2. Use basic shapes (geometric, organic, free form) to draw recognizable parts (ears, legs, tail, face) of the cat paintings 

3. Add feline parts (claws, teeth, tail, whiskers, nose) to the recognizable parts (ears, legs, tail, face) of the Cats On Fence Paintings  

Day Two, Art Start

Is there a story to tell about your cat? What are some other popular images we see everyday that would make great paintings? How does the choice of color in this painting impact the art?"

1. Add patterns (stripes, dots, swirls) and neutral colors (black, grey, white) to positive space (cats) of the cat paintings

2. Add rainbow order (red orange yellow green blue purple) to the negative space (background) of the cat paintings

3. Add rainbow order (red orange yellow green blue purple) to fill in the negative space (background) of the Cats On A Fence Paintings

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Cats On Fence Paintings for Assigned Tables

2. Set Up Studio Area (oil pastels, watercolor, paint brushes, water bucket)
