ROY LICHTENSTEIN PORTRAITS

Roy Lichtenstein Portraits

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Roy Lichtenstein Portrait using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use primary colors (red, yellow, blue), shape variation (geometric, organic), and line types (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) inspired by American Pop Artist (1923-1977) Roy Lichtenstein
  • Use drawing techniques (cross hatching, stippling) and design principles (balance, proportion, harmony) based on the Pop Art Movement
  • Define Ben Day Dots (small colored dots spaced close, wide, or overlapping to create an optical illusion)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

2. Read Roy's House by Roy Lichtenstein and Susan Goldman Rubin
3. Discussion Questions "Did the artist create pop art that shows emotion? Does the artist demonstrate an understanding of pop art? Does the artist solve the art challenge in a unique way? Does the artist attend to details and demonstration high quality craftsmanship? Did the artist use materials properly? Do you know Roy Lichtenstein? What background information did you learn about the artist? Where and when was he born? What kind of art education, if any, did he have? Who and what influenced the artist? What art movement, if any, where they apart of? What was this movement influenced by? What cultural trends influenced the artist, music, politics, fashion, and more? Did the artist create a range of work? Was this artist only known for painting portraits or did he sculpt or draw? How original or pioneering was this artist? What did he do that had never been done before? Does the artist have a distinctive style or trade mark? What materials or media is he best known for using?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Drawing Paper
2. Use pencil to draw a contour line of facial proportions (head, face, shoulder) of self portrait
3. Use pencil to add facial features (eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows) of Roy Lichtenstein Portraits

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Roy Lichtenstein Portrait for Assigned Table

3. Discussion Questions "What do you think or feel about the artwork? Do you like or dislike the artwork? Do you feel that it is a successful work of art? How has the artist used line in the artwork? Has the artist used pattern in any part of the painting? Would you say this is a warm or cool image? Does the artist's use of color make all or parts of the image stand out? Does the artist help to add the mood or atmosphere of the painting? Does the painting look realistic, abstract, unrealistic, lifelike, exaggerated, or childlike? Do you think the artist worked slowly or quickly to produce this painting? Why do you think that? Is the painting flat, decorative, rough, or textural? Are there dots or dabs of texture used?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add adornments (piercings, tattoos, hairstyles) to positive space (face, nose, shoulder) of portraits
2. Add costumes (jewelry, clothing, make up) to positive space (facial feature) of portraits
3. Use black sharpie marker to outline facial features and facial proportions of Roy Lichtenstein Portraits

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Roy Lichtenstein Portrait for Assigned Table
2. Set Up Studio Area (washable markers, rulers, pens)

Lesson Activities

1. Use primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to fill in the positive space (clothing, jewelry, facial features) of portraits
2. Use primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to fill in the negative space (background) of the portrait
3. Use value (lightness/darkness of color) to add shadows/highlights to Roy Lichtenstein Portraits
