PICASSO HANDS WITH FLOWERS

 Picasso Hands With Flowers

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Picasso Hands With Flowers using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use line types (horizontal vertical diagonal), shape variation (geometric organic free form) and space (positive negative) inspired by Cubist Artist (1881-1973) Pablo Picasso
  • Use art element: line (horizontal vertical diagonal) and design principles (composition repetition balance) based on Cubism
  • Define Cubism (using simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and collage to show multiple viewpoints in an image)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Bouquet Of Peace (1958) Pablo Picasso

2. Read Meet The Artist: Pablo Picasso by Patricia Geis

3. Discussion Questions "What influenced Pablo's work? What was Picasso's blue period? What is cubism? Where did Pablo Picasso grow up? Which political movements was Pablo Picasso associated with? Who co-invented Cubism with Pablo Picasso? When did Picasso start signing his work "Picasso"? What was the name of Picasso's pet monkey? How many works of art did Picasso create during his lifetime? How old was Picasso when he completed his first painting? Which is not a characteristic of cubism? Who is the giver of these flowers? Who is the receiver of these flowers? Does anyone know what an artist is? What is the name of this painting? What do you know about one of the greatest artist of the 20th century? What was the first of the most commonly accepted periods of Picasso's work?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 12" X 15" Drawing Paper

3. Use analogous colors (yellow green blue) to fill in the positive space (flower) of the Picasso Hands With Flowers

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Picasso Hands With Flowers for Assigned Table

2. Hand Giving Flower (1930) Pablo Picasso

3. Discussion Questions "What elements of this drawing seem real? What adjectives would you use to describe this artwork? What verbs would you use to describe this artwork? What elements seem dreamlike or imaginary? What is strange about this artwork? What is exciting about this artwork? What do we know about the artist after viewing this artwork? If you could ask the artist a question, what would you ask her? Why do you think the artwork was created? Why do you say that? How do you think the artist feels about the final product? How do you think this artwork was made? Why do you think the artist made this work? What do you think the artist is trying to say in this artwork?"

Lesson Activities

1. Add shape variation (geometric organic free form) to negative space (hand) of the flower drawings

2. Use patterns (swirls, zig zags, stripes) to add a design to the negative space (hand) of the flower drawings

3. Use watercolor to blend patterns (swirls stripes zig zags) for the negative space (background) of the Picasso Hands With Flowers
