KOALA COLLAGES

 Koala Collages

Learning Targets

I can...

  • Create an original Koala Collages using drawing techniques learned in class
  • Use shape variation (geometric, organic, free form), space (positive, negative), and texture (implied, actual, visual) inspired by English Artist (2012-Present) Hannah Dale
  • Use printmaking techniques (etching, engraving, embossing, stamping) and design principles (composition, proportion, repetition) based on British Art
  • Define Texture (the feel or appearance of a surface)

Lesson One
Day One, Art Start

1. Koality Time (2022) Hannah Dale

2. Read The Koala Who Could by Rachel Bright

3. Discussion Question "What does this picture say about koalas? What does the background tell me? What can I inference that the artist might like? What lesson did the main character learn? How can we apply that to our lives as well? Would the koalas have come down on his or her own? What do we know about his character that might help us make this inference? How many things do you want o try, but you fear the risk? How did the artist use printmaking to add texture to the koala? How did the artist divid the koala's face with a horizontal line? How did the artist use dry brush and sponge painting to create texture on the koala? How did the artist add value in this artwork?"

Lesson Activities

1. Choose 8" X 12" Drawing Paper 

2. Add line types (contour, outline, perspective) to the positive space (animal) of the koala collages

3. Outline line types (contour, outline, perspective) with neutral colors (black, brown, grey) for the Koala Collages

Day Two, Art Start

1. Retrieve Koala Collages For Assigned Tables

2. Three Of A Kind (2022) Hannah Dale

3. Discussion Questions "How many species of koalas are there? How far can a koala travel in a dat? What do koalas eat? How much food do koalas consume? How long do koalas sleep? What is the biggest threat to a koala? Did the artist paint in long brush strokes? Are the lines curved, straight, or tihin? Does the artist use a variety of shapes? What types of shapes do you see? What are the colors that the artist uses? what do you think the artist is about? What are the similarities in the story behind this artwork? Have you heard these stories before?"

1. Use analogous colors (blue purple red) to fill in the positive space (animal) of the koala collages

2. Use analogous colors (blue purple red) to fill in the negative space (background) of the koala collages 

3. Use embellishments (plastic eyes, bubble wrap, brown paper) to fill in the positive space (animal) of the Koala Collages

Day Three, Art Start

1. Retrieve Koala Collages for Assigned Table

2. Set Up Studio Area (glue sticks, construction paper, oil pastels)

Lesson Activities

1. Add highlights (reflective light, light source) to fill in the positive space (animal) of the koala collages

2. Add shadows (reflective shadow, cast shadow) to fill in the negative space (background) of the koala collages

3. Add details (eyelashes, fur, claws) to the positive space (animal) of the Koala Collages
